I fear that instead of having focus on some of the dwarves that had only two lines or three in the first film we are going to have a lot of time lost listening to Tauriel and Legolas. [mad]

I hope Tauriel is killed when Smaug attacks Laketown. If she is still here. Or maybe decapited by Azog. At worst I hope she doesn't survive Bofa and get swarmed by bloodthirsty Dol Guldur's bats haha [evil]
 
I share your fears regarding the lack of dialogue with many of the dwarves (of whom we've had almost no speech in AUJ).

I'm really hoping PJ will characterize more the 6 or 7 other dwarves (excluding Balin, Thorin, Kili, Bofur, Dori and Ori), in this next Film - but it seems that from a couple of interviews and the way the filmmakers talk, this has already been done in AUJ - mainly at Bag-End.

Whilst I tend to agree that the spirit and general outlook of the Company was splendidly brought forward in those beautiful scenes, I would still very much prefer getting an individual insight into each and every one of the, as yet 'unknown', dwarves.

Fili stands out the most (considering his role in TABA). I'm really worried that his role is being overshadowed and taken over by his younger brother.

I've said this a couple of times. I actually feel very sorry for Dean O'Gorman who never quite gets the credit due - mainly, his lack of presence in most of AUJ's highlights: Trollshaws, Rivendell, Goblin-Town ...

I really hope he's given some highlight moments in DoS as I'm sure O'Gorman can deliver the right performance.[:|]

I personally think those who are hoping to see all the dwarven characters given more characterization that isn't central to the plot may have to wait for the EE's. As with LOTR, I imagine the extended editions will go a long way towards further fleshing out and developing support characters. This was definitely true in LOTR, with characters like Eowyn and Faramir being vastly more developed in the extended versions, and even minor characters like Haldir getting more screentime.

IMO Aidan Turner does have an engaging presence that comes through the camera well, but also noticed that he seems to get more screen time than
Fili - even tho Fili is the heir. There's a lot of dwarf interaction I miss - so far if you didn't know, there's been no real familial interaction between Thorin
and his nephews. The WETA books talk a lot about how each dwarf was built as a character, and we see that at Bag End, but I'd like to see more of it.

The Legolas and Tauriel additions have their own fan base, but agree with the OP - personally resent the screen time being taken up by these two, to
what seems to be an excessive degree. *Gloomily* no, I don't need to wish Tauriel an awful death, I just need to wish her someplace else (like a
Snow White and Huntsman sequel). I wish I didn't have to sit through the rumored Tauriel-healing-of-a-child and this possible romance side plot stuff.
I wish I didn't have to sit through so much of Legolas with his strange face - for me it's OK that he's there, but it's still jarring, keep thinking he's in the wrong
movie as this is NOT Lord of the Rings. I wish I didn't have to sit through (probably) a lame Tauriel death scene that forever changes Legolas, etc.

For me it'd be more interesting to see a quiet little conversation between Thorin and Bilbo, in that supposedly Bilbo becomes Thorin's confidant.
Just some little scene that shows their changed relationship. And some dwarf interactions that shows their characters, gives them more lines.
So much work was done with these actors, has been done by these actors, and WETA and other books talk about how PJ was going to highlight
dwarf culture in a way that had never been done before. Was pretty unhappy with trailer 1 re all the ELVES, ecstatic with trailer 2, but agree with the OP.

It's PJ's movie and story, and there's a lot I love, just wish he wasn't so elf-enamored. Or maybe it's marketing since I've seen plenty of positive posts
about the action elves. But for me it's just scenes to sit through, and I won't get a charming scene of Fili and Kili giving Bilbo sword-fighting tips,
or see Bombur's supposed nervousness of Dwalin, or see Gloin and Dori bickering, or Thorin quietly talking to Fili about his responsibilities.
But Boyens did say we'd get to know the dwarves through the story, so hopefully there will be at least SOME dwarf character details fleshed out.
Does Bilbo even know at this point that Fili and Kili are Thorin's nephews, and princes?
 
Seriously guys, the movie isn't even out yet, you don't know what Tauriel will be like or how much screen time she will get. It's certainly no reason to wish a violent death on her![shocked] DOS will be sort of like TTT in that the story will split into multiple parts. I thought the subplots were balanced out very well in TTT and I think they will be just as balanced in DOS. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing each part of story play out and I will reserve my judgment on Tauriel and the rest of the movie until I have actually seen the movie!

As much as I generally don't care for the inclusion of both Legolas and Tauriel, the amount of Tauriel hate that goes on just creeps me out. Violence is too often our answer to our ills. We need to see the movie first, I would think?

Thennnn we can wish her a speedy death! hahaha! (just kidding! I think I'll be fine with her!) [;)]
 
when they can focus more on dwarves and less on action and the elves. Beorn's Hall, travelling to Mirkwood, cages in Thranduil's home and Erebor scenes can be all used to introduce us more those dwarves that were in the background in AUJ. I would like to see more Nori, Fili, Gloin, Bombur and Bifur and hear some of their lines because other dwarves were more used by now.

Tauriel will most probably die but I am indifferent towards her right now. If she will play her role good it will be nice to watch her and her death won't be nice but we will have to see that yet.

While I agree, what scares me about her death is if it happens during the BOFA and either Fili or Kili fall as they defend her (as the rumour once stated). That I will absolutely not accept.[mad]

The nephews belong next to their uncle. Full stop.[laugh]
 
I'd like to see Nori and Bombur both get a few lines in at least. Not expecting much out of Bifur aside from a few lines in Khuzdul and some screwball facial expressions..
 
While I agree that the other dwarves should get more screentime - I don't think Bombur got one like in the entire movie of AUJ - I don't know why people are so down on Tauriel. She's a badass! I have no reason to believe she will die at all, I think that's wishful thinking. I AM looking forward to Bard, so is my daughter (she thinks Luke Evans is HOT!). But the BIGGEST new character will be Smaug the Stupendous, and I don't know how much screen time he'll get, but whatever it is it won't be enough (LOL)!
 
Tauriel seems like a really good addition so far... a mixture of Eowyn and Arwen to some extent. A character that could potentially fit into Tolkien's world imho. A character that is not just there to serve women or whomever, but one that first and foremost gives the non-aristocratic Woodland Realm Elves a face which Tolkien did not provide in the novel.

If done in the right way (mainly, if it didn't overshadow the deaths of Thorin, Fili and Kili). Since people often complain that there is no real danger in the battle/fight scenes of The Hobbit, there would be nothing more heartbreaking the death of Tauriel and Legolas' (and Thranduil's) reaction to this.

And I'd be more interested in that reason for her dieing, than 1 or 2.

If you go back to previous posts, you will see what they are (there has been a lot of discussion about this). I do not wish to start an argument, so won't discuss them here.

I'm not personally thrilled, however, about either of their inclusions, though I would have been fine to see Legolas in a cameo (preferably minus the zombie-eyed, pursed-lip look).

So far the reasons I've read are 1. not original cannon, and 2. Didn't like her in Lost. Yes, I watched Lost and understand why some didn't like Kate, but she was okay by me. Is there another reason I'm not aware of?
