I just hope they will find someone who looks like Sir Ian Holm.
Looking like an hobbit is not enough, for me.
Continuity must be a top priority. Or they'll fail miserably.
Nobody will connect emotionally with the character if he looks completely different, at least I won't.
 
In the article they say that Martin Freeman looks like a hobbit. I agree, however he is also the one actor I've seen so far that actually looks like a younger Ian Holm...see link below.

I think the most important thing is to cast someone who will be able to play the part the best; I'm /extremely/ against casting that is primarily based on looks. Whoever it is has to make me believe he IS Bilbo, not just that he looks like him. I don't mind if The Hobbit movies stand on their own.

A good example of casting that didn't actually meet expectations but was a perfect match nonetheless would be Alan Rickman in Harry Potter. He's a good 30 years too old for the part, but he's such a fantastic actor that he pulls it off briliantly. Acting match FIRST, looks are secondary.
 
Casting should be based on who can bring the character to life through their acting skills, not on looks. As we learned from LotR, a lot can be done with a good wig, makeup and special effects. I'm confident that PJ and GtD can make just about anyone look like Bilbo.

That said, Martin Freeman still seems to be an awesome choice for the role...
