One of my favorite comics of all time, xkcd, often throws in random nerdiness in its strips.

Its most recent comic takes LOTR and four other movies and shows character interactions in what can be described- simply- as a line chart. Only its the most complicated line chart of all time.

Take a look for yourself. Large picture, so warning for dial-up users.
 
Two minor points (remember, I am a professional nitpicker) -
1. Elrond joins Aragorn in Dunharrow too early (before Gandalf and Pippin left).
2. There is nothing in the movie to indicate Gandalf returned north with the Hobbits (it's in the book - as far as Bree).

But once again, a really fine achivement!

LOL, it looks like a subway system map!

I love the thick black "tree trunk" lines of orcs etc. coming up from Sauron. Sinister!

I love how Gandalf swoops up and down - he's all over the board! Busybody. and how Boromir's line continues for a ways with a note - "dead"

I was thinking an extended X-axis with a Arwen's line running all by itself after a while would have been poignant.

But thank you, Ainu for pointing this out - it's a way cool chart!

It might have been kinda neat for the author to have continued Boromir's line after the dead symbol and have it intersect Faramir's line [unsure]

Do you suppose the author could be persuaded to post just the LOTR picture? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to print it out.

I can edit the picture to remove the other movies for my own use, but I'm sure the author wouldn't like someone else to pass their work on to others.

The punchline being the "Primer" film at the end of the strip (and you only need to read the Wikipedia entry to get that he was completely and utterly correct XD). I know that others have cropped his more complicated panels like this before- if you wish, you can put a watermark with xkcd.com somewhere in the pic, since that's the url of the comic strip home page.

If you don't have Photoshop, I can quickly do a crop and watermark and post a link up here for anyone who is interested in printing out the LOTR part only.
 
So you can do whatever you want to it, and redistribute it to whomever you want, but you can't sell it, and you have to say where it came from.
