LOTR: Extended Edition: Blu-ray faults...

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a dilemma about the Blu-ray extended additions of the DVDs, because I heard that there is a green overlay in some of the scenes and i just wanted to know if you guys know if that is with all of the copy's of the extended edition blu-rays.

but I only just got them, and so far I have only seen the first half of FOTR. I can tell you that I was extremely impressed by what I've seen so far though. Especially the soft, slow landscape scenes of The Shire. I saw a distinct improvement visually over previous versions. I'm told the sound quality is a lot better as well, but I can't give an objective opinion on that since this is the first time I've watched the trilogy since upgrading to a new surround sound system.

Hope this helps. On other message forums more attununed to discussing picture quality as opposed to the movie content, like we do here, the members are divided as to the new look the films have. Myself, I don't mind the tint (although I wish it were not there), but I do mind how dark Fellowship looks now. From what I've read, this is on all copies of Fellowship--and all regions.

Yep, Patty's right: the green overlay (which is a measureable fact, not a matter of taste or perception) is present on every copy in every region.

But other things are worth bearing in mind, too. Like Patty implies, the contrast has been dramatically increased, too, resulting in a much darker picture with plenty of fans currently reduced to fiddling with their TV settings in order to get a watchable picture. There are also, in my opinion, some highly questionable changes in the colouring of certain scenes (the interior of Orthanc, the Pass of Caradhras and the "into the wild" sequence after Bree) as well as the green overlay.

Add all of these together and you have a fairly irritating viewing experience on your hands, and one that breaks the visual continuity of the trilogy. Is the film still watchable? Yes. But is that enough for a film of this calibre? No.

At the minute, we're all waiting for a response from Jackson. The generic statement by WB on release day claiming everything was as intended satisfied no-one. Until then, I'd hold off on your purchase if I were you. I wish I had.

I've been following the controversy, and I was hesitant to purchase the new Blu-ray set, but I bought it the weekend after it was released (I just couldn't wait). After watching FOTR, here's my take on it:

Is the color change noticeable? Yes, definitely, in some scenes more than others.

Would I have noticed it at all if it hadn't been all over the internet? Probably, but I'm honestly not sure.

Did it detract from my enjoyment of the film itself? Not a bit. While I found myself examining the color grading more than I normally would have, I inevitably got swept up in the film itself and forgot about it, and this is at least the fourth or fifth time I've seen the entire thing. Overall, the Blu-ray looks stunning, and in the end, the color issue just didn't bother me that much. If it was indeed a mistake, I would love to see it corrected some day (without additional cost to us, of course), but for now, I'm happy with the set.
