Greetings, all and sundry! Our esteemed barmistress, Altaira, has been delayed, so let me open up the bar and get the drinks going. It's a chilly Fall day here, so I've got plenty of soups to warm you up, and fresh breads to go with them! What would you like to drink?

I'll be going to a pot-luck hosted by our town's Historical Society tonight, and have made a plate of Greenwood Hobbit's Cornish Fairlings to take to it!

So what have you been busy with this past week, and what are your weekend plans?

I'm still on a high from the excitement of today's TIME post over on Main where Asfaloth outruns the Black Riders and makes it across the Ford of Bruinen with a fading hobbit on his back! NORO LIM!

Oh... a pot-luck sounds great! Especially if you're bringing a Greenwood Hobbit creation! *high five* Expect a lot of oooos and aaaaahs :D

No big plans for the weekend except to hope the rainy weather scats so I can get some stuff done! A hot chocolate with some marshmallows sounds perfect! I hope you have a great time... and thanks for taking such great care of us :D

An Angel MIst (steamed milk with a shot of Bailey's AND Kahlua). Breakfast time here so I'll have a scone.

I am getting up at 4:30 am tomorrow and Sunday to watch my nephew Evan and his son row in the Head of the Charles regatta. This is a big deal for both of them. My nephew will be rowing a single and also be part of a 4-man crew at the Master's level; his son is rowing in a junior men's 8. They are rowing for the San Diego Rowing Club. Evan has competed in the HotC many times, ever since his Harvard crew days, but it's a first time for 16-year-old Jacob. Who is getting a LOT of interest from various universities with rowing programs so hopefully, like his dad before him, an athletic scholarship will be on offer.

After their races tomorrow I'll be heading out for a walk with friends here

I have a new book on hand for editing. This one is about self-care for the neurodivergent. Should be interesting! I'll start work on it Monday.

In the good news department, I went in for my annual skin check (Celtic skin!) and the doc said I had a basal cell carcinoma and another thing that might be squamous cell carcinoma. BCC is no big whoop, although I do have to have what's called Moh's surgery for it, but SCC is a bit scarier. Fortunately pathology showed it was benign. The really ugly black mole on my back turned out to be nothing at all, but the doc froze it off for me anyway. We laughed - sort of - about how the older you get, the more life seems focused on maintaining or preventing health problems. For most of my life I only saw a doctor when I hurt myself!
 
I'm going to make a hot chocolate with mini-mallows for myself, too! Unfortunately, here at work I can't get a pic of it - would you do the honors, please, gramma?

What a race that was, and I even liked the movie version! Nothing beats the river rising up against the Riders. [cool]

Rainy here, too, gramma, so it'll be a house-cleaning day. Are you getting decorated for Halloween in your area?
 
You have to get up early out there to see the Boston races! Best of luck to them! Rowing is not a common sport, so no wonder there are universities who'll be trying to nab your great-nephew. [cool]

What a pleasant walk that will be, your area has such gorgeous shorelines. And that town may be tiny, but it's definitely got a big heart - let us know how their tacos are!

Oh, the older you get, the more odd things pop up in one's skin, anyway! Glad you got an overall good report (and got rid of an ugly mole)! [laugh]

I swear I'll stop talking about rugby soon but today is a big day! My team, Taranaki, plays a home final in the national competition this afternoon - in the first season that we're back in the stadium after the grandstands were condemned as earthquake-prone six years ago. This season's been huge! The crowds have slowly built up week by week and we might just sell out the ground today.

Just one more game to (hopefully) get our hands on the cup that we've held only once!

But also, in little less than an hour, the All Blacks will play in the Rugby World Cup semifinal against Argentina. Last week's game against Ireland was so tense that I couldn't watch the second half - I cleaned the kitchen while the TV played in the other room. [laugh] I expect (hope) that this game will be easier, but we've been tripped up in the semifinals before.

We have a long weekend so I got into the garden yesterday and planted-out my summer vegetables and fruit. Tomorrow will be a big weeding day, followed by sowing wildflowers to feed bees and butterflies. I'm still tossing up about whether to turn that small patch of lawn into a wildflower meadow. I mean, it's not like I use the lawn for anything other than to walk to my fruit trees. So, still pondering...

Right, the couch and a live feed from Paris beckon. Have a great weekend, everyone!
 
was in NYC. Don't remember the place. I'd visited my niece in February and we had walked for HOURS and I hit the wall and told her "I must sit down NOW." So she steered me into this place that had hot chocolate cooking in slow cookers until it was the consistency of thick soup. They ladled it out into bowls and dumped an enormous chunk of fresh-made marshmallow on top. We sat in the balcony and nursed that bowl of chocolate soup for an hour, and then we were ready to take on the world.
 
The best I've come across here comes with a stick of chocolate so you can melt it in the drink to double-chocolatitfy your drink, if you want. [heart][:)]
 
This is quite an exciting weekend for you, go Taranaki and All Blacks!

If you sow the bit of lawn, make sure to keep a path to the trees so you don't have to walk on any of the flowers! Is it a specific mix that you sow?

BUT THE DEAL with your check-up is FANTASTIC! :D I'm so glad you got in there! I'm supposed to get a checkup *checks watch* about 8 months ago! Uh-oh...

Half-time at the RWC and the All Blacks are up 20-6. Those Argentinians are big lads! Fast and strong too - it's a heck of a battle.
 
I love the idea of planting flowers in that space crying for it! AND you could mix a few of the Butterfly/Bee seeds in with them. I love these little puzzles of what to do!


Half of my front yard is a baby-pasture of daisies in the summer :D
 
I've been surprised & delighted by what came up. The "golden coin" cosmos have persisted to this day, adding bright spots and a nice contrast to my magenta dahlias.
 
Early in the week we took a day off and headed north to the Huntertwasser centre, which was very interesting. Had coffee at a cafe by the gallery on the harbour's edge, then on our way back stopped at a fab little Middle Eastern cafe in the middle of nowhere and had a delicious "Levantine Tea" - Turkish coffee and scones with fig jam and rose jam. It all made for a nice day out.

We finished clearing the vegetable beds, and I ran a bunch of beanstalks and prunings through the mulcher to make some excellent mulch. Room to plant out the remaining tomato seedlings, but the capsicum and aubergine ones are recalcitrant, so I may have to buy some seedlings.

I plan to make a blackberry and apple pie with the last of our autumn gleanings of both still in the freezer, which should see us through this weekend and the next.

It's grey and drizzly today, and very humid, so I'm feeling a bit lazy - probably exacerbated by the fact that we had our Covid boosters, which leaves me rather sleepy. I've realised that one of my cucumber seedlings has several flowers open, so I'd better do some planting out of those today, as (all going well) we don't get a lot of bees inside.
