the second one begin?? Is there any speculation on the break?? It was easy for LOR, but making a break in a smaller story. Couldn't find anything about it on the official site.

It was generally accepted that the first movie was going to end with the dwarves' escape on the barrels from Thranduil's palace...

...BUT that was when there were TWO planned films, not THREE. Now, some people are suspecting that the cut will come earlier (maybe with the entrance into Mirkwood, maybe with imprisonment by the elves)...

the first film will still end the way it was intended but the second film however will end way sooner than it was going to, my guess the second film will end right after the death of smaug. Giving PJ and co. more time on Dol-Guldur in film two, remember how they switched from the ents attacking Isengard and the battle of helm's Deep in TTT? i'm betting they will be switching from the white council's assault on dol-guldur with the aid of wood elves and smaug's destruction of lake-town/defense of lake-town. Film three, BOT5A somewhere in the middle, bilbo returning to the shire after and than some bridge stuff/setup for LOTR's.

is that it's very hard to conceive of the rest of TH novel taking up two films! [tongue]

Even if they end the first film slightly sooner, (say, with the capture by the wood elves), wouldn't that give Film 2 some more content (introduction of two new cultures rather than one?)...and they'd be able to have the Dul Guldur plot kick into high gear while Thorin & Co. and interned in Thranduil's dungeons.
 
there has to be bridge material in film three, i agree, there is just no way it could take another 4 hours plus to wrap up the book if it ends with them floating down inside the barrels. Also remember, Dol-Guldur will take up a lot of space in film two.
 
especially if smaug is going to be a big part of film two...like i said PJ will probably do what he did at the end of TTT, except instead of switching between the ents attacking isengard and the helm's deep battle it will switching between the assault on dol-guldur and smaug raining fire down on lake-town.
 
All the interview quotes suggest that the additional material will be background from the Appendices on the history of the dwarves, Dol Guldur, etc. True "bridge" material would include events after the historical scope of The Hobbit, and there has been absolutely no indication that such material would be included.
 
I've obtained a source since last night ... not so much a source, just a snippet of information from elsewhere, but not big enough to worth making a thread about it. [tongue]

When The Hobbit was still a duology, film 1 was apparently going to end with Smaug's eye opening ("confirmed" by Cumberbatch). Whether it has any truth is another question. But if this is the case, I wonder how it will work it now being a trilogy.
 
In an interview with Cumberbatch when the trilogy was still a duology, apparently AUJ was to end with a shot of Smaug's eye opening. If this is true, then there must be a re-jig of the second half of film 1.
 
I don't see why it would. Assuming that film 2 begins with their arrival at Laketown, and ends with the destruction of Laketown, then there is no reason why the sub-plot would take up 90% of the screentime. Too much happens in the main plot to only take up 10%.

Honestly, the best answer was the first, Shelob'sAppetite's. It's 3 films now and no one knows where they begin and end. Theories, on the other hand, are many and varied.... [;)]
