Pretend for a moment that Mr. GDT were to grant TORn 20 questions regarding 'The Hobbit'. What would you ask? I don't mean that you should supply all 20 questions but if we were all allowed to submit some questions for TORn to weed out and pick 20 from, what would your question be?
 
is the most important factor you bring to the Hobbit films?

(I think that would give us a good steer on the type of films that GDT will be creating.)
 
What's the criticism you most want to avoid? I.e., what's the trap you most want to resist falling into?

How can the apparent "silliness" of the Rivendell Elves in The Hobbit be reconciled with the more "nobler" Elves of LotR: can the singing and teasing (both there, and on the return trip) be retained in a plausible manner?
 
OK..this should be an easy one.

From listening to the DVD Commenatary of Pan's Labyrinth, I have gathered that Mr. Del Toro does not like working with horses. That's putting it mildly....I can't quote his exact comment as this is a family board[laugh]. (On the DVD, said comments are from a scene in the middle of the film, the one involving horses)
I hope he realizes that while horses don't play as large a role in The Hobbit as in LOTR (though they may well in the 2nd film), they do play a role. He will have to working with horses for a very long time.

I hope he is fully prepared for this.[sly]

As to a question: What is your position regarding the "Narrator" of The Hobbit (1st Person) that gives the book its delightful childish quality, and are you or are you not going to have any references to it? Personally, I am hoping for a more adult tone, at least after Rivendell, and reference to an outside Narrator would be a disadvantage artistically.

How do you plan to balance the childish with the adult tones of the tale. (that's a biggie but well, it is going to come up, from a lot of people!)

(My first post! Yay! *ahem* Back to the topic at hand...)

This is going to sound odd, so I hope I can describe it correctly. But....
Do you have any ideas in your head for the design of Smaug, Beorn, Mirkwood, etc. Do you intend on following the basic patterns and designs that were set in LotR to get the same Middle-Earth feel, or are you going to do something different? (ie., Pan's Labyrinth-style designs)

I have LOTS of question about this supposed "tie-in" movie... but probably too many to post here at the moment.[laugh]
 
The narrator aspect is an integral part of the book, and as you noted, much of what gives it a lighter tone, particularly in the early stages. It is the narrator who tells us about Hobbits and adds a lot to the characters and Hobbiton.

LOTR films did obviously use a narrator (switching from Frodo in the initial script to Galadriel in the finished film) and did it effectively IMHO. How the script handles the narrator from the book will be a fascinating decision.

Peter Jackson shared the adventure of filming King Kong with us through weekly production diaries, and they really fed our anticipation and appreciation of not only the filming process, but gave us glimpses of what we could look forward to on screen.

We've been waiting such an incredibly long time for these films to be made. Only in the last few months have we really been able to feel like they would be made at all! The films will also, most likely, be our last dance with Tolkien's stories being adapted to film; so to be a part of the excitement and evolution of these last two would be such a gift.

I know from the article on the homepage, the look of these 2 may not match up with the world we know already in LotR. I'm anxious about what that means, but I trust Peter... and he trusts you... so I'll go into a free-fall of what the two of you are creating. I know it's going to be glorious!

There. The question's in the subject line. The rant ooozed out. Couldn't help it. I've got no will power. I'm obsessed... and loving every minute of it! *spasm*
 
If we had had Production Diaries BEFORE LOTR came out, then we would not have had the wonderful, voliminous,detailed EE Appendices. I like my detailed Diaries AFTER the fact. I want no overt production spoilers.

But that's just IMO.

We had some spoilers before LOTR came out, but...:)

It was fun watching the hide-and-seek of it!

While I agree that waiting for Christmas morning to open all of the presents, I think I'll burst asunder if I'm forced to wait for 2 more years for tidbits!! OMG... I'm totally getting a headache! :D I'll bet if they took my blood pressure right now, I'd bury the needle!! YEEEEEHAAAAAAAA!!!!

I think I just found the answer to my own question in the thread "Hobbit announcement wtihin the next 5 days. GDT not following PJ's lead?". Guess I should've looked at that thread first before I posted my question in regards to the style.[sorry]
 
Welcome to TORn!! You've GOT to make a copy of your link and first post and squirrel it away somewhere. So many of us can't remember the exact day we started posting, and I know for me it's been a thorn every since!!
