Could I point admins to this, in case an admin comment is needed?
A probably familiar situation- someone is rude, and then reacts to it being queried by claiming they were merely joking. Now of course that can be a smokescreen of bluster under which someone who is never going to apologise is best left to retreat, and maybe no further action is needed. But maybe an admin comment about etiquette is needed to back up my existing remarks. I’ll leave that to your judgment, including a decision to let things lie.
The whole thing would be too silly and trivial to bother with, but I worry that tolerating rudeness to “rookies” is hardly the way to encourage new voices in the the Reading Room. And new voices are something we could do with at present, I think.
