John Rhys-Davies may have a Hobbit cameo?

Ages ago, John Rhys-Davies spent a few days visiting the Hobbit set while he was in New Zealand. Unlike Elijah Wood or Orlando Bloom, for well-known reasons there was no announcement that he would reprise his role as Gimli son of Gloin.

However, at a recent convention, a Reddit reader asked him point-blank about a possible cameo in the Hobbit.

At first [Rhys-Davies] denied it, but after a little pressing he smiled really big, laughed, winked, and said that maybe it was possible. His smile... his laugh... I'm taking this as a pretty big indicator that he will be involved in some small way.

Considering that in Lord of the Rings, Rhys-Davies also provided the voice of Treebeard, could it be possible that for The Hobbit he might cameo something like the voice of one of the trolls? (Highlight the sentence to see our hidden, possibly spoilerish speculation!)

I think we'll get to see the little backstory in the Blue Mountains where Thorin decides to set out on the quest, and tells Gimli that he's "too young" for it. How geeky would that be! [laugh]

I think it's great. Gimli is one of my favourite characters from the Lord of the Rings. He wasn't done justice in the actual films, but I would rather have a Gimli cameo than a Legolas cameo.

[:)] They could just have Brett Beattie (already there...or was) play scale Gimli again and have John Rhys-Davies do the voice over for a quick cameo.

Although I still want Ian McKellen to do at least one! Would make him copying their voices more believable.

Who else could JRD be the voice for? The spiders, the thrush?

I really liked the Gimli from the books, but felt they didnt get him right in the movies, so i feel if it could be done right then it would be nice to see a different side of him (as long as they dont make him out to be simple and comic relief like he was in LOTR movies) then i would be happy.

If he isnt in the movie then its not that big a deal anyway to me, but would be nice to see him redeemed in my (and i think others eyes) as a movie character.

IMO he looks like a dwarf already, so put him only a shorter beard, make up and there you have it... A younger Gimli to grumble, because he left behind .

Ehhhm, DanielLB i told you so that the picture on the wall was a huge evidence of JRD's cameo....[tongue](i'm just fooling around)

I think he has as much right as any of the other returning actors, though I wonder if he could play a younger Gimli without different prosthetics...

A voice cameo for the trolls or a raven perhaps would be equally good! Andy Serkis did multiple voices (Gollum, Witch King, Uruk-hai) in the trilogy so why not JRD? [;)]

If they really, really, really needed him to wear it again, couldn't they just change what it was made from?

They would also have to come up with a prosthetic which makes him look younger. Like others have said though, he doesn't really need it anyway.

IMO, it gives the illusion of narrowness, rather than depth.

I want a broader world, where Midde Earth is so large and diverse, that the characters of LOTR simplydon't fit into it.

Also, I want to see a story that focuses on the Hobbit, and the key characters in the Hobbit, not that wastes valuable time on LOTR character reunions.

This is a film, not an excuse for fans to wave to their favorite characters. IMO, of course.

I was always baffled by the decision to give him such heavy prosthetics, particularly because he looks quite dwarven in his natural state. A poor decision, IMO, and one that caused JRD loads of unnecessary pain.
