I’m missing 3D.

Hi,

In my opinion, what really stood out in TH (being the last major movie adaption of Tolkien’s writing) was that it was filmed in 3D. I much enjoyed the immersive effects of stereoscopic viewing. Landscapes offered a totally different viewing experience, and when the dwarves appeared to stir up Bag End, you felt like you were sitting at the table with them …

Granted, ROP is television stuff whereas TH was meant for theatre. That makes an understandable difference in the evaluation whether to film in 3D or 2D. Yet it would not have hurt to film in 3D, particularly if the intention is to sell the show as movies at some point later in the future.

I liked watching 3D movies and that was also the reason why I stuck to nVidia graphic cards before. I never understood why nVidia gave up on 3D Vision. I have not figured out how to watch 3D movies on a PC nowadays.

Just thinking...

To use that Kiwi-ism - yeah, nah.

3D died in every meaningful way, sorry, with the possible niche exception of VR.

RIP, let it go. Speak respectfully of the deceased. It's deader that an ex-parrot.

In fact, I didn't even realise I wasn't missing it until you brought it up...and made me remember I wasn't missing it.

I'm an artist and photographer, and very visual... and I can take 3D or leave it, and I have no use for it in my house. Of course I have limited tech, so here I am typing on the same computer screen I watch streaming series on.

I do appreciate the HFR versions: movement becomes less blurry, details sharpen.

I actually prefer the choice, in the theater. I'll often see a film once in one format and a second time in the other (if the film merits it).

I find it difficult to appreciate the depth of detail in a 3D film, so when I want to breathe in the world of Middle-earth, I find it easier to do so in traditional HD format.

Speaking of...I just watched the HD version of TT last night and it seems they really remastered quite a lot of the CGI, in addition to adding some more distracting filters to certain scenes. Faramir's flashback to the reconquest of Osgiliath now has this awful white "dream-glow" all around the edges that washes out all the crisp detail of that scene in the original edition!

I was one of the strong advocates for "No 3D Hobbit No 3D LotR"
and I asked then "exactly how would 3D improve either?" The same is true for this new series. Until they perfect holographic movies 3D will remain a novelty or a gimmick to draw in more cash. KS

I never liked 3D and I don't mind at all it is dead... the worst part was when cinemas had some blockbuster up and only had it in 3D, forcing you to pay a premium AND wear those crappy glasses. Luckily, those times are over. Let it never, ever, come back... or at least wait 40 more years.. should be dead by then.

Avatar was awesome in 3D. As for 'normal' films - meh. I saw the second Hobbit film in 3D and thought it gave a sense of "being in the picture" with the actors. Nice, but not really important to the film. I will be interested to see what the new Avatar film does with this technology.

I got really annoyed when Thorin stuck Orcrist right in my face in BotFA. :(
