IGN reports we'll know by Christmas who "The Hobbit" is...

I can't get in... firewall and all [:(]... but I got this summary from 411.mania:

Director Guillermo del Toro recently spoke with IGN about when the lead role in The Hobbit.

When asked if James McAvoy had been cast as Bilbo Baggins, del Toro said no.

"Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There's nothing to fear or celebrate yet."

He added that the announcement will be made around Christmas.

"In six months time we should know. We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift."

Doesn't this say "We already know who we're going to cast as Bilbo, the actor knows, he hasn't signed yet and therefore we cannot say anything at present, but he already knows ".

Whoever he is, he has to be the happiest actor in the world right now.
 
They have someone in mind, sure. But doesn't it take a while to make it official? And I'm sure they'd hate to announce their main character and then have him back out *cough*Aragorn*cough*

Maybe I'm just really terrible at reading between the lines, though?

Well, seeing that Jack Black has denied that he any involvement ... does that leave Daniel Radcliffe or James McAvoy?
I'm not happy with either (or any of them) - they are too well known and identified with other parts - and too young.
I believe Guillermo that he will announce it here - and I do trust his choice.
Its nice to hear it will be announced - maybe the 24th of December ... it'll be a great Birthday present what ever day it arrives!
The rumpurs should be flying by December 1st.

It maybe that we hear of who will be cast in other parts sooner than we do Bilbo - but I think who ever will be Bilbo will be the icing on the cake.

I thought PJ realized he had cast the part of Aragorn to young, and that's when he was replaced. Also I read somewhere that the first actor had a different view on how to play Aragorn than PJ had.

Baggins announcement set for December. by Chris Tilly, IGN UK UK, June 4, 2008 - As Hobbit casting rumours continue to circulate, we caught up with director Guillermo del Toro this morning to quiz him regarding the project. Unfortunately, he kept his cards close to his chest regarding actors, but he did give us a clue as to when an announcement will be made.

When asked if fan favourite James McAvoy had bagged the the Bilbo Baggins role, he replied: "Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There's nothing to fear or celebrate yet.

So there you have it; six months till GDT announces his Bilbo, which gives us six months to try and persuade him one way or another. The IGN-UK office is firmly on the McAvoy bandwagon; what do you guys think? -=-=-= I think this follows what GdT and Peter said in their online visit with us. No announcements until the end of the year or early next year. *sigh* I'm thinking we're going to be visiting this tease A LOT over the next several months! *twitch*
 
how everybody is *SO SURE* that Mr. Tumnus is going to be Bilbo.

Get it through your heads, people in the British media: McAvoy has moved way beyond typecasting. He deliberately took something like the Last King of Scotland role after Narnia so as to avoid the fantasy trap, which he sees as limiting. (Ha--tell that to Viggo...)) I can't see how he would want to spoil his upward trajectory as a "serious actor" in order to strap on hairy feet. His Golden Globe nom for Atonement shows us where he likes to see himself heading. He wants us to know that he is *not* Mr. Tumnus.

IMO, he doesn't need the role.

I say give it to someone of great talent but who is still toiling away in obscurity, and would be thankful for the role...like Martin Freeman. [sly]

Stuart Townsend left the cast for legitimate reasons after filming had already started. The connection between his leaving the part of Aragorn and GdT naming an actor for Bilbo too early was a tentative one at best. Sorry for any confusion.
 
Why to wait sooo loong just to know that XD [shocked][shocked]

Really, now I live on an everyday and constant waiting.
I´m always waiting and waiting and waiting... Good that I think I am a patient person... or I was XD

I think there´s something around James McAvoy really, he should be Bilbo already XD
At least I know by experience those rumours always become true, so I believe anything.
What I have seen as a constant rumour, it became true.

But, anywayz who knows.

that could have been a disaster if they had kept him in the role. Not that I have anything against the guy. But having an actor in a pivotal role in the film, that you just can't buy into, could make the difference between a success or failure of a film. That's why they need to get Bilbo right. He is the main actor of the film, and if the audience doesn't buy into whoever they choose to play him, the film will not be a success. Which also could impact F2 as well.

I cannot make my mind up over McAvoy. There must be some actor out there somwhere who looks like a young Ian Holm...who is an unknowner!

I sense from the quote that they have considered McAvoy or are considering him...just the way he says "not yet. And then adds "not yet" for the others too. I agree with the others though about McAvoy not wanting to go back into this genre and end up being stuck as the man who played Bilbo (but what an honor).

I like his acting style, and he's not as young as all that - he'll be over 30 by the time filming starts. But you're right, he doesn't really look like Bilbo... In fact, watching him the other night in Starter for Ten, it struck me that he'd have made a good Frodo, if they'd really wanted an Englishman instead of Elijah Wood.

I looked him up on IMDb and one of his quotes caught my eye:

Where it gets difficult is when you get two or three jobs back to back where you're playing leads and doing 13, 14 hours a day, six days a week, and you suddenly think, hang on a minute, how can you have a life like this? Do I work to live or live to work? How can I work properly with no life to inform the work?

Does that sound like a guy who'd be willing to put his life on hold for a year and go to NZ to work those 14 hour days and six-day weeks? Just wondering.
