Idol finale -- anyone else watch?

I hadn't been checking dialidol.com, and I thought David A. would probably win, so I was pleasantly surprised that it was David C. They both have nice voices, though, and I was just glad that, of the final four, they were the two that made it.

I was worried that Simon had dumped on David C. so much on Monday night; In particular, Simon had criticized David C.'s choice of one of my all-time favorite songs (Collective Soul's "The World I Know") and praised David A. for (IMHO, cravenly) reprising "Imagine," rather than choosing a new song. After Monday night's show, I was even moved to phone in a few votes (I normally don't vote, because I watch the show on tape after voting has closed, but the finale allows voting for 4 hours.)

But I've got to say, it was great to see Michael Johns again! It was nice that he was featured so much. His singing in last night's show only confirmed my opinion that he should have won the whole thing. I really think he left so early because his fans got complacent and didn't vote. I hope his plans to collaborate as a songwriter with David Cook actually come to fruition.

All in all, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the show -- I've never been a particular fan of George Michaels, but his performance of "Praying for Time" was a huge highlight. I also was strangely moved by Brooke White's duet with Graham Nash on "Teach Your Children" (again, one of my all-time favorite songs). Nash just seemed so incredibly pleased to be there, singing that song, and Brooke seemed so incredibly awed and honored (as well she should have been).
 
between the Idols themselves. The David's together were unexpectedly complementary when brought together. I hadn't expected that. And Carly and Micheal together were just plain fun to watch.

Altogether, yes, of the finalists the best two ended on top and in the right order. I would have preferred Carly and MJ there with them (and perhaps MJ to win). However, it was a good entertaining show and I found myself smiling through most of it.
 
I was very impressed by the Davids' duet -- considering how different they seem when performing separately, their voices went together very well and they worked together well (though David C. is much more assured moving on stage). David C. really does have an attractive voice, though his "rocker" approach causes him to turn raspy or shouty (and sometimes to have pitch problems).

You're right about who the final four should have been, but I didn't enjoy Michael and Carly's duet as much as I thought I would, mostly because I didn't like the arrangement, and they also seemed out of synch with each other. They probably didn't get enough rehearsal time, though I also had the impression that Carly is not used to singing duets, as she seemed not to be paying enough attention to what her partner was doing.

I, too, found myself smiling through most of the show -- which was nice, because I had had an exhausting day. :-)
 
Mr. FF and I really enjoyed it. While Carly and Michael were singing, I suddenly turned and said, "You know, I think this really was the most talented top 10 ever!" I do think that the right people made it to the finals. I voted for Archuleta but I thought before the performances that David Cook would win. Then Archie sang so well I was sure he had it in the bag. So the results were a surprise but I'm still happy.

I liked seeing and hearing Ruben again, Jordin did a good job, Carrie Underwood was fabulous but almost unrecognizable. What is Melinda Doolittle doing these days? I Googled her and apparently she was at the finale but I didn't see her, and I haven't heard much about an album. I know she wasn't top two, but she should have been.

Random notes: Cook performing with ZZ Top was incredibly cool! How fun! The singer of "Apologize" (can't remember name) that little David performed with seemed like he was trying to compete with Archie during the song. Too much. George Michael was weird but wonderful. I laughed loudly for about five minutes when Dancer David whispered "naked" during "Father Figure". All chances of him ever being taken seriously again are gone. The girls generally did better on their group numbers than the guys did. Amanda seemed extremely uncomfortable on stage. Jimmy Kimmel was funny. I thought they should have put the lyrics of the "You are my brother" guy's song on the monitors so the audience could have sung along. The marching band was an inspired touch, though.
 
has one single out ("My Funny Valentine") and reportedly is working on her debut album. She doesn't seem to have done much since the show. She absolutely should have won; I'm convinced she didn't make the final two only because of her age and appearance. She's probably the most talented *singer* ever to have appeared on American Idol, but it's not clear what kind of career she'll have.

Thanks for reminding me: David Cook singing with ZZ Top also was one of the highlights -- that was great!

Got to disagree about Jordin, though -- I still dislike her singing, and I thought she looked ridiculous. As did Carrie Underwood -- what a bizarre and inappropriate costume!

I don't know what you mean about the vocalist of OneRepublic (Ryan Tedder) trying to "compete" with Archuleta (after all, he wrote the song!). I thought they worked together quite well, and I actually think that was the best performance of the entire season for little David. He seemed more at ease on stage during that duet than I have ever seen him.

I loved him crying when his Mom made it to the stage, and I loved him sharing his moment witht he rest of the Idols, particularly David A. "That's my brother!" with Andrew at the end - really cute.

Ruben was cool, I still love him.

Loved the "You are my Brother" dude. He's so happy, and it wasn't as contrived as a lot of the Idol wannabe. I think he really enjoyed performing that song!

I coulda done without Mike Myers and his 10 minute movie plug.

I have mucho respect for George Michael and his vocal range, but his voice did sound a bit off- he alluded to a cold after he sang, so I'm thinking that's it. Beautiful song, though.

Carrie- my husband nearly fainted. He's in love! I'm not a fan, but she sounded good. Yes, she is the next Shania Twain, folks.

Stripper dude whispering "naked"- hilarious!

Donna Summer can still belt it out of the park. She must be 60 by now.

Gladys Knight and "the Pips"...meh. Good idea on paper, but after the first minute or so it got old. However, that being one of my favorite songs of all time (it really is!) I was singing along.

Michael Johns and Carly were hot. It should've been a different top 4- those 2 and the Davids, but I still think the best man won.

Yes, it would be hard to just play and sing backup while someone else sings your song. Still, ZZ Top let David Cook do the singing for "Sharp-Dressed Man", but the "Apologize" guy started the song and David Archuleta came in on the second verse, so it wasn't as much of a "star vehicle" for him. Also, Ryan Tedder continued to sing a major part after Archie started and as the song went on it just seemed like they were trying to outsing each other. It was weird for me.
 
That whole movie clip and interview was just not funny, especially after the third time he said, "Mariska Hargitay" as a blessing or whatever. Pretty eyelashes, though. And I did like the Pips -- it was surreal to have Ben Stiller, Jack Black...and Robert Downey Jr....dancing and singing. Where did they come up with that group? What next: Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott....and Johnny Depp?
 
and cryptic too: I think maybe what you observed was a case of Karma biting Tedder in the...ego.
And, yeah, that makes me smile a little. *heh* ;)

In all fairness. The producers of the show surely decided how the duets would work. The performers weren't improvising -- it was all rehearsed, and I didn't get the feeling anyone was trying to "outsing" anyone. Tedder's clearly the more skilled vocalist, but that's not his fault.
