The NZ Herald is reporting that 13 people have turned down knight/dame hoods now that PM John Key's reinstated the title in NZ. One person that's not mentioned is a certain ex-rotund film director - nor are any of his creative mates. Could there be a Sir Peter on August 1, do we think? Surely it'd be richly deserved, if they're saying people like Sam Neill were nominated.
 
Richly deserved! Not just on artistic grounds, but just for the sheer economic benefit to NZ.

Peter Jackson is a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Only "Principal Companions" and "Distinguished Companions" are eligible for Knight/Dame.
 
I just checked the official website, and there's no mention of a minimum age. If there was one, I imagine it would be 18, or possibly 21.
 
is the trig point thing on the top of Mt Sunday/Edoras. There's graffiti saying "Where now the horse and the rider?" Unfortunately it doesn't show up too well in that small size - I ought to change it really.
 
That's one of many reasons we regret not making it to the South Island -- we missed Edoras! Ah well, we're starting to talk about a return trip in 2011.
 
the mini-series called Mother Love starring Dame Diana Rigg (which really needs to come out on DVD, but I digress...). Someone was given a "K" but they mentioned he hadn't gotten it before because for conductors (which he was) you had to be 50. But that was England. And that was fiction.

Yes, traditionally in England there were "rules", even if unwritten, about who got what honour after how many years. We don't have such a complicated hierarchy of honours here, though.
 
I know Peter for Knighthood has been called for by fans since Fellowship was released. He really is very worthy of the title. Other than Sir Edmund Hillary, I can't think of anyone else who has brought NZ forward so much.
 
I can think of a few influential types who have also done a lot for NZ - the last PM Helen Clark springs to mind, even though she was becoming a bit ineffectual by the end of her nine years.
