I really wish Ian Holm would return

Ian Holm was the best Bilbo. He may be old now, but I am pretty sure make up and CGi could fix that. Look at Bilbo at the end of Return of the King, he looks very old, but that is due to some great make up. The choices they have for Bilbo are pretty bad in my opinion. It won't be the same. The one who is the closest to Ian is Martin Freeman, but it seems GDT and PJ don't want him. Daniel Radcliffe is a horrible actor in Harry Potter and I cannot see him doing any better in The Hobbit. Jack Black, no way. He is a funny guy and all, but he isn't right The Hobbit AT ALL. James McAvoy doesn't fit the role for me either, for some reason.

BRING IAN HOLM BACK!!
 
With all due respect for Sir Ian Holm, he is now physically at least 26 years older than the 40 to 50 year old Bilbo. The Hobbit is a journey movie just like LOTR and walking around in those Hobbit feet, and being the central character of the films would mean a pretty merciless shooting schedule with hours averaging 14+ a day, often in inclement temperatures and weather.

They de-aged Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in X-Men the Last Stand (I only watched the 5 minute opening just for that scene) and it was not THAT bad, but it was a little unnatural looking. Yes, I'm sure its possible to do that to Holm for an entire film, but imagine the costs and post production time. This still doesn't help Holm with the physical nature of the role. I just can't see it happening.

I think the best we can hope for is GDT casts a relative unknown who surprises us with his ability to bring the sort of warmth and humility that Holm brought to Bilbo. All this talk about well known actors/celebrities is just typical of the early pre-pre-production period of a film,. The media won't thrill their market if they suggest John Smith will be playing Bilbo. So I'm sure Guillermo, who is an accomplished director and knows what he is doing, will make the right choice for everyone involved including the fans. I hope he was not right about having been handed the keys to the nuclear button. That would be unfair for a director to feel they are in that position with the fans.

I'm so depressed that Ian Holm won't be back.
I'm sure that, IF HE IS FINE AND HEALTHY, they could surely find a workaround for his "age problem", be it makeup or CGI or whatever they can find.
For the action scenes where more "physical power" is needed, they could just use a double (real or CGI... just look what they did in FOTR in Moria when they cross Kazad-dum bridge... 10 years ago...TEN YEARS AGO)
I don't know... right now... I'm in the mood of completely rejecting this movie... these movies.
 
and sit the movie out other than that. Sorry, I'm not stuck on Sir Ian Holm playing Biblo. I love the idea of having him narrate since it connects him to the BBC Dramatization to the Movie Trilogy to The Hobbit movie. However, I think we need a new actor to play Bilbo. Also, I don't want to see him in a cameo unless he is writing his memoirs years latter like he was in the FOTR. Perhaps the movie could open with him in Rivendell in his room finishing the story and reflecting on it, similar to what he did with Concerning Hobbits and then the action fades back to that spring day in April, when he is sitting outside his door, blowing smoke rings when an old man with a blue hat and gray cloak and clothing shows up . . . .
 
It would be unfair to subject him to the sort of shooting schedule that would be expected of the principle cast. Remember some of the LOTR commentary when Billy said that sometimes they would have days off, but never Elijah he hardly ever had extra time off and he was exhausted. Now tell me who has more energy and stamina than a 18-20 year old male....

I too hope they find a relatively unknown actor to pass the baton to....And to those who don't want to see it or are turned off by Ian not being Bilbo.....don't write things off yet...remember how people felt when the first casting rumors came out for FOTR....and things seemed to have turned out just fine.[shocked]
 
Yes, everyone was surprised with LOTR, but The Hobbit is part of LOTR, and if they are getting all the same actors back, it'll seem weird without Ian. And most fans have Ian's Bilbo embedded in their heads.
 
After reading the trilogy and the hobbit umpteen times before the films I had my own vision of what each character was like and looked like....it did not diminish my enjoyment of Elijah as Frodo, or Sean as Sam...Viggo as Aragorn...in some cases Peter's vision was better than my own.

Guess we will wait and see what happens....Ian had three distinct looks to him through the films.....who is to say the actor they choose may look enough like him as to fool the mind....I'll admit replacing such an icon is a difficulty but if it must be than it must be.
 
hopefully as narrator of the story, but I'm hoping to have someone else tackle the demands of the full film. In the book, Bilbo is the focus of the story, so the chances of him being in almost every scene would be a challenge for anybody! Peter and Fran did such an amazing job casting for LotR (including Ian Holm) that I trust them (along with GdT) to find a great Bilbo to counter Ian Holm.

Peter was determined to have Ian Holm in LotR for the same reasons many of us felt... that Holm's portrayal of Frodo in the BBC adaptation made him a must for the film adaptation. I remember reading that when Peter and Fran visited Holm in person to ask him to be a part of the film, the first thing Holm asked was who was going to play Gandalf? :D

I'd bet all my LotR Action Figures Holm will definitely be Bilbo, but most like not as the lead character.
 
You see Bilbo (Ian) in Gollum's cave in the FotR prologue. It'll be weird having that whole sequence changed when the new Bilbo comes.

But I really don't mind a new actor. My love for LOTR/Hobbit will get in the way of who plays Bilbo anyways, ahahaha.
 
When Bilbo is telling the story, he occasionally sees himself as he is aged in situations when he was younger. Lemmie see, how much more can I complicate this ;)

Breaking through the treetops and seeing black moths.
Sitting in the Great Hall of Rivendell.
Standing on top of a hill of treasure holding an Arkenstone in his hand.


I know they won't do it this way... I'm just fooling around. Peter has said that they'll probably fix the images of Gollum in the Fellowship of the Ring so he'll resemble the Gollum/Smeagol throughout the rest of the films, so they could fix the prologue Bilbo as well... but I hope they don't. There are enough continuity errors throughout all 3 films that this one eentsy-weentsy moment would be sweet to keep.
 
I think is for the actor Ian Holm himself, what an honor to be so highly esteemed by us all, and surely an actors dream to have bought a character out of a book to life so well that we can't bear to think of anyone else in his place.

I'm not really expecting him back in any form other than narrating (which would be ideal), so for now I'm hoping and trusting GDT to make a good choice.
 
I love Ian too, and I do wish he would come back, but it seems unlikely. I'm thinking he be in there for a couple scenes at least. But, like you said the brilliant story line(well it will be if they follow the book) will distract me from a non-Ian-actor. [:)]
 
Ian Holm has even said himself that he isn't up to doing The Hobbit. And I also saw that 5-minute intro in X-Men with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The two of them were made to look about 20 years younger, and I tell you, it didn't really work. Oh sure, for a quick glance it was fine, but for an entire scene...not on your life! It just looked kind off creepy. Image poor Ian Holm with prosthetics piled on! [crazy]
 
I`m sorry bu this just doesn`t make sense! Bilbo is to be much much younger so they will certainly find a replacement. Holm would look ridiculous wearing prosthetics but that doesn`t mean the story should be left on paper. It`s just a chance to be given to a new talent such as Wood was before LOTR!
 
but I don't think he is irreplaceable. But you may get your wish if all the pieces don't fall into place.
As I said whatever will be will be...I trust that Pete and the rest will take great care to yet again take great pains to satisfy the fans.
 
... I trust PJ and I`m sure they will find a way with GTD. I was only terryfied by xxxyyy idea of leaving the story on paper. Whatever challenge it is to cast Bilbo I still think it should be a chance given to a young talent
 
even if McKellen, Lee, Weaving and any other actor present in LOTR wasn't available. They just would find a replacement to bring it "to life".. or should I say... to death?
Ok, I'm getting more and more pessimistic... I think I need to leave all the rumors and wait patiently until it's released, and then bestow mu judgment on it.
But if things won't work out (and without Ian Holm I'm pretty sure they won't) it will be a sad day.
 
I'll admit I have some angst over how it could turn out....but isn't that how we felt about the trilogy? If we all had become pessimistic and refused to see Rings we'd have missed out on a wonderful adventure. I think I'll deal with my own worries by talking them out here and trying to be optimistic about all of it. A part of me tells me it will never be the same...the magic created by LOTR was so new, so unexpected, at least for me....even if these two film are just as good the wonder at the magical transformation of middle earth from page to screen can't be duplicated, at least I am having trouble thinking I could ever feel that way again....But who knows perhaps I will be l=pleasantly surprised.
