As they were principally messengers of Manwe, some kind of spirit in eagle form, they may have had the same limitation that Gandalf would have had re interaction, though they certainly did intercede on occasion. The Eagle who bore it could have become corrupted etc.
So, in one sense it appears to be an obvious solution, but it may not have been a sound choice.

get me started... I have had such long debates over this....
I actually even mentioned this debate in my letter to Mr. Christopher Tolkien (and in an email to Mr. Simon Tolkien) both, of course, favoring my side of the argument. But even that didn't phase my opponent.

but cripes I love it when geeks do these things so well!! I remember the first time I watched it, I was afraid Frodo would get dropped by accident... but seeing Gollum sail into the pic still cracks (pardon the pun) me up!
