Help with image posting Movies-LOTR, SCOD 9 thread

I tried the code for inline attachment image posting while in edit mode and it did not work. The edit screen unfortunately timed out in the process -- any chance the image could be added?

Any help with image posting would be appreciated as well (I am on a Mac and use Safari.)

Telain, I've added the photo for you. The only way I can make the embedded images feature to work is to switch to basic editor and use the {image} URL {/image} tags (swapping the brackets for square brackets).

Hope that helps with your future posts. :)
 
the code would be different if one wanted to upload an image onto TORn for embedding into a post.

But as I said in the SCOD thread, I use the link for 'Get Markup Help' for a reminder of what that code is.
 
I added the image as an inline attachment (that worked fine) and I tried to use the "Get Markup Help" link with the code for including an image from an inline attachment

(bracket)inline attachment_fotr0210.jpg(bracket)

and it didn't work -- I still need some help here.

Should I use the url link code instead? I don't want to accidentally hotlink...
 
The inline attachment only works for things you have actually attached.

So... first you have to attach the image.
Assuming your basic editor looks like mine...
You look below the compose field, click 'Choose File'
That opens up a browser pop window for your harddrive where you find the image that is on your computer. You find it and double click (or click file and click open), tick the box (in the message board interface) that says 'Inline' and then click 'Upload attachment'. (You can also tick the box that says 'inline' after you upload if you forget to do it before.

Then you write the code for the inline attachment using the name of the jpg you just uploaded.

NOW... in order for an image to be displayed within a post here at TORn it must conform to size guidelines. That means, for SCOD, you need to download the image you wish to discuss and change the size to one that conforms to the guidelines here. If you are not comfortable with that procedure, then you should just link to image at the LOTR Screencap Library as you did.

USING THE URL CODE: you could do this if you have an image that conforms to TORn's guidelines and is hosted at a site you own. You cannot embed the image you see at the LOTR Screencap Library for two reasons:

one... it's too large

two... embedding that image that is hosted on a site you don't own is considered hotlinking and is not good netiquette. (a site you 'own' can include an image in your own account at sites like photobucket, picasa, etc.)

sites often have mechanisms in place to prevent and/or punish people who hotlink images that are hosted on their site. The LOTR screencap library does not allow hotlinking and will substitute a 'anti-hotlinking' image in the place of the one you are trying to display.

Let me know if there are parts of what I've provided that you'd like more clarification on or have other questions.
 
I did everything you suggested doing in your response and I read and understood all the guidelines about size restrictions before my attempt.

I copied the image to my hard drive, resized (and saved it to the new size.)

I attached the image as an inline attachment successfully, as I mentioned in the above post.

On my first try I forgot to include the steps to embed the image so I immediately began editing the post.

Since your screencaps in the tutorial did not match mine, I went to the Get Markup Help and used the code for inline attachment.

Upon previewing the message, the image did not appear. I tried different variations of the code, but none of them worked. I thought perhaps the preview screen wasn't able to show the image, so I clicked on Make Changes; unfortunately the Edit screen had timed out.

Please help. I've read all of the guidelines on posting images, image sizes and the Get Markup Help screen several times and I am at a loss.
 
I'll play with the process and we'll go through it together in this thread to see what's happening.

I have today off so I can devote some time to it. Otherwise... I'm working on the wiki! :-)
 
I have no idea why, but if I want to use inline, I have to make sure the filename is all one word.

If, for example, I uplink "chocolate chip.jpg", nothing shows in the post.

But if I rename it, then uplink "chocolate-chip.jpg", it's fine.

Could this be the problem?

edit to add: Okay... I got this to post. I'm working this out with telain by email as I have more freedom sharing screenshots than we have here on the forum.

If we figure it out, we'll post our solution here for future reference! :-)

I think I know what it is but it will complicate matters if I speculate and that's not it.

I've emailed a series of screenshots to telain (I'm all about the visual). As I said in my test post, if we figure it out (and I'm optimistic), we'll share our solution here.
 
I blatantly just steal these from the web. I make very few of them. I always make note of the source and would be willing to share it with anyone who asks. And I only use each one for no longer than a week (with a few exceptions here and there).

The more popular the 'magpie' concept becomes... the easier it is to find images. And each search term paired with magpies comes up with new ones.
 
was interpreting the "Get Markup Help" code correctly. See the following lines, understanding that I have used () in place of square brackets for the code.

What GMH says :

(inline attachment_filename.gif)

This only works if your file is named "attachment_filename.gif" Perhaps what is clearer to some is:

(inline filename.gif)

Thank you to everyone for your help!! Hopefully this thread will help those who have been having a bit of trouble with that particular code.

I was doing a run through of posting images in Basic Editor on my own -- taking good notes for telain -- and when I got to that code... I knew in my heart that was likely causing the problem she was having.

I have read that Markup help more than once and been confused by it. I wonder to myself... is 'attachment' something that is part of the code and remains... or is it part of the mock file name and gets removed.

I try one option to see if it works and then try the other if the first doesn't work. I usually leave it in and find it doesn't work and then take it out and find it does.

I would suggest that, as telain says, it's a bit confusing. It is right. But if one can be confused by something one usually will be confused. And that one confuses even me and I do better than many in figuring this stuff out.
