The classic film by the same name was shot near where I live in the local town of Woodstock, IL (not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania) and this is the 20th anniversary.

What is your favorite Bill Murray role?

Dr. Peter Venkman - Ghost Busters
Phil Connors - Ground Hog Day
Mayor Cole - City of Ember
Bob Harris - Lost in Translation
Ernie McCracken - Kingpin
Carl Spackler - Caddyshack
Pvt. John Winger - Stripes

OR, it doesn't matter, he is the same character in all movies!

I would have to choose Bill Murray as...Carl Spackler! Obviously not nearly as smart as a gopher OR groundhog, but very determined (and a bit of a pyromaniac). Actually the gopher was a far better actor, and had the coolest theme song :)
 
I should have taken a read through the end credits! We just watched it (again) while eating dinner - it's rewinding now. (Yes, there's these things called "VHS tapes"...)

Do you know why they selected Woodstock instead (aside from it being a very lovely, photogenic place)? Have you been to the filming sites?

I've seen Bill Murray in a few movies, but I think I'll always remember him as a Ghostbuster. [:)]
 
P.S. you can probably catch on tv all weekend.

We still have a vhs player but haven't used it in awhile. Just for those films we have not bothered to get on dvd/blu ray etc.

A very handsome town! I'm glad that the Punxsatawney folks weren't too put out by the relocation.
 
That would be one of my favorite Murray films. Ground Hog Day is often thought of as just a goofy, fun comedy - which it is - but the way it shows him going through so many stages of understanding in coming to terms with his situation is brilliant and clever. (sorry, really awkward sentence [tongue])

I also liked him in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. But I think my all time favorite Murray role was, if I remember correctly, uncredited. It was his role as Dustin Hoffman's play-write roommate in Tootsie. One line is something like, "I don't want people to come up to me after seeing my play and say, 'Hey, man, I just saw your play; I really dig it' I want people to come up to me and say,'Hey man, I just saw your play. What Happened?' " [laugh]
 
My favourite flicks of his are Stripes, What About Bob "I'm Sailing!", Ghost Busters, and Scrooged. I enjoy him in everything he's done, but those are MUST SEEs for me!

As much as I love Groundhog Day (just finished watching it), and Ghostbusters, The Man Who Knew Too Little is my favorite Murray movie. Great spy spoof.

He managed to be melancholy and yet totally hilarious. And that beard! Positively dwarvish.

Groundhog Day was my grandparents' anniversary. That's the only reason I can remember it (while completely forgetting my parents').
 
Did he see his shadow where you live? Will you have six more weeks of winter? Get serious, people, this is important!
