Farrah Fawcett succumbs to cancer at age 62...

It's surprising. They've always been around. I've been looking up videos of both of them for a while now. I'll miss them.
 
My hair could never imitate her lovely, feathered mane, nor could my skin tan like hers, though I tried and tried. The former was harmless. Alas, the latter was not, as I learned from my dermatologist twenty years later.

I had a strange, tenuous connection with her when my car broke down twenty years ago in Houston. The repair shop gave me a loaner car that they said she once owned. (She had lived a few miles from there, and her family was still there and had sold the car to the service station.)

I read that within a few hours of the news of his death, “Thriller” was #1 on iTunes. It reminded me of my days working in a record store when Andy Gibb and Roy Orbison died. Suddenly albums you hadn’t sold in weeks flew off the shelves. I’m glad people are remembering his music and want to hear it. I hope that will be his legacy, not personal eccentricities.
 
And it was a little surreal. Every car, every store was playing Michael Jackson songs. And it was all anyone was talking about.

What a day indeed!

Vancouver actor Lorena Gale dies of cancer

Amidst all the news about celebrity deaths this past week, the Canadian theatre, film, and TV industries suffered a loss when local actor Lorena Gale succumbed to abdominal cancer on June 21.

Earlier this year, in February, the local theatre community rallied around her to support her during her battle with cancer.

Gale racked up an extensive number of roles on-stage and on-screen, in TV shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, The X-Files, and The Outer Limits and movies ranging from Things We Lost in the Fire to The Chronicles of Riddick.

I had to look him up to know who he was. I just saw him on a talk show last week. I wasn't really paying attention but they had him and another pitchman and they were talking about contrasting styles: loud vs softer.
