Donald Sutherland with a British Accent - who could he play?

I like Donald's acting and he has such a distinctive voice that I think would be great for some character in the Hobbit, but not sure who...a wise council member, an elf, a dwarf, a king? Definitely not a Hobbit, but I'd really like to hear his voice with a British accent playing some character...

I'm not sure if you would have watched Pride and Prejudice, for example.

I can't imagine what role he would play. And I don't think I'd like him in The Hobbit, anyhow.

... I've seen him in P & P and a couple of other films in which he has attempted a British accent. It's not bad, I suppose, but it makes me wince a bit at times (especially in P & P). It never comes off as anything but pseudo-British. Don't get me wrong, I've been a huge fan of Donald's since KELLY'S HEROES back in 1969, and seen him turn in some astonishing performances, but this is one of his (very few) weak points. There are many American and Canadian actors who do wonderful British accents, but Donald sadly isn't one of them.

But I suppose I could cope with him as the Master of Laketown. Still, I think I would be happier with another actor in the role. Still thinking about that one ...

... but I can't see DS fitting into The Hobbit anywhere. His characteristics would dicate that he play some Lord of men, I feel.

The more power-corrupted, the better, I would add.

Unless ... he could be Bard's stern, uncompromising, noble yet concerned dad. For when they put in Bard's backstory.

that movie was messed up! As Canadian actors go, he manages an American accent well. Not so much, as you say, British RP. One thing that may give him an edge, acting chops aside of course, is he is quite tall -- Morgan Freeman would appear as a hobbit beside him quite naturally.

distant older rebellious cousin of Aragorn and rival for the hand of Arwen Daughter of Elrond. The three of them use to hang out at the Forgotten Inn east of Brie. Many a wild tale came out of those days but these were later suppressed when Aragorn assumed the throne of the Kingdom reborn. The last ever heard of Hawkeye Fasthands (as he had come to be known) was when he quit his bouncer job at the Inn and set out for Rivendell.

hopefully no-one. i'm not a fan of famous actors in these films. i'm sure there are lesser knowns or unkonwns who can do just as good a job and be much less distracting...i dunno. it's probably my vice. just sick of Hollywood actors. however, i agree with those saying Master of Laketown. i could see that.

I don't recall if it was just a rumor or if he was actually in the running. I can't really think of a role I'd want to see him in in the Hobbit, though.

they were talking about Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman as Faramir and Eowyn so nobody had much wailing to spare over the Donald Sutherland idea. IIRC, the rumors also tended to get Theoden and Denethor mixed up, so it was hard to tell for a while who was up for which part. I seem to remember when Bernard Hill's name first came up people weren't sure which role he was cast in either.

Usually, I can figure out when someone has replied to the wrong person and it doesn't matter much. But it seemed you thought I was questioning you (and perhaps your opinion) and I didn't want you to think that.
