Casting "Star Trek" movie on par with casting LOTR

In both cases, the casting and acting got the essence of the characters right, but the different packaging made me think about and appreciate them in new ways. I think that, more than anything, won me over, and that made me more open to the other non-canon things they did with both films.

With LOTR, the elaborate attention to sets, costumes, props, etc. was also a big factor. Trek did not do as well for me there, except for the very loving way they showed the exterior of the Enterprise -- those scenes really made me happy, it was like seeing an old friend again!
 
But I agree too. I saw it four times in all, and I liked it more each time. I watched all the Star Trek episodes on TV when I was a kid (I remember at first I was scared by the transporter effect :-)) and I went to see the first movies, then watched the beginning of the new TV series ... then I drifted away. But still I remember most vividly the original TV characters, and honestly I feel the new characters resonated as younger versions of them. They somehow managed to bring them to life in younger form in a way that didn't seem to be caricatured. I don't know how they did it but it was spot on perfect. And I agree with whoever said it first, because at this point it's been said more than once, that the director and writers pulled their own kobayashi maru, by coming up with the alternate timeline idea. Yes, they totally cheated, and for the same reason, because if they tried to do it any other way, they were in a no-win situation, so they changed the rules to make it winnable.
I felt they were true to the characters. Look at the idea of McCoy getting Kirk on board the Enterprise by inducing a fake illness in Kirk. McCoy, who always went with his heart in opposition Spock's logic, here goes by his heart and drags Kirk onto the Enterprise, whether he 'should' be there or not.
And I liked the portrayal of the young Kirk as a driven, rebellious, definite 'trouble-with-authority' type, who wasn't going to be happy or fit in anywhere where he wasn't able to make all the decisions. ("So what is it with you? Do you enjoy being the only genius-level repeat offender in the midwest?")
And I loved that behind this young Spock's eyes, you could see all that human emotion trying to find its expression.
And I'd love to know who first had the idea the Karl Urban could play McCoy and whether even they were amazed at the result ... I imagine that he surpassed even their expectations.
Yes it was an action flick, yes there was eye candy for all, and yes there were some cliches, but it was also clever, witty, touching, and exciting. And also, personally, I am so tired of all the depressing repetitive doom mongering about the future. This was Star Trek to me because it also brings back that vision of the future where at least there *is* a future.
I am looking forward to the sequel(s) and hope they are as good [:)].

Except for Bana`s pathetic performance, everyone did great. LOTR, however, had too many pathetic performers (Otto, Wenham, Noble, Bloom) and the Hobbit foursome was so annoying while promoting the movies that I`m not surprised they are barely working these days. Everyone in the industry must`ve had enough of them. Also, ST cast has a real star potential particulary Pine, Yelchin and Saldana (being the most marketable).
