In celebration of the 4th of July, I thought i'd post a musical birthday mathom of sorts, with a tour around the good ol USA...

The only rule is that the song title must contain a city/state from the USA ... Enjoy !

I have also been listening to 'Back in the New York Groove' a lot this week, after hearing it on a film soundtrack - would have no idea that was sung my a member of Kiss...

But now I live in Minneapolis and although not all of these songs have a city or state name in them, they are about Minneapolis or Minnesota so I'm going there. ;-)

Death on Hennepin by the Flash Girls

The Flash Girls is a now defunct folk duo comprised of fantasy writer Emma Bull and Lorraine Garland who is Neil Gaiman's assistant. The group formed at a Guy Fawkes Day party at Gaiman's home. Neil also wrote quite a few of their songs.

anyhow... Hennepin is a major avenue running through Minneapolis including the uptown area where this song takes place. Tom Waits did a song about the downtown area, 9th and Hennepin.

I often complain about being stuck in Oklahoma, but when it comes down to it, I love this crazy state[:)] I can't listen to this without getting teary-eyed.

Same goes for Tulsa. It's not the most exciting place, but it's quite lovely (lots of art deco architecture) and has an interesting musical heritage.

Here's Tulsa Time by Eric Clapton who, due to this song and all the time spent here working with Leon Russel, is considered an honorary Tulsan.

of the time in my English class in Poland when a girl was telling the class that she had seen Sweet Home Alabama the movie and some of the others spontaneously broke out in song. One guess what that song was.[;)]
 
but if memory serves, 'Back in the New York Groove' is from the Ace Frehley solo album, which I haven't listened to in a couple of decades, but it was one of the first albums I ever owned so it sticks in my memory[:)]

What movie has that song in it ?

I came so close to adding that one to my list too, but in the end decided to go with a few slightly more obscure tracks.

psst...noticed the first two links are the same, but I looked up the Clapton song, it's so cool he's considered an honorary Tulsan....Mr. Clapton has extensively studied practically everything about that most American of musical genres....the blues.
 
Kalamazoo by Primus? Kind of an homage to Miller. A,b,c,d,e,f,g,h I gotta girl and she ain't from Kalamazoo! They also have a tune called Hennepin Crawler.
 
Does the Hennepin in that song refer to Minneapolis?

It's a prominent street here but Father Hennepin (along with Father Baraga) made his way across the upper midwest and lots of places make note of them. When we were in the UP of Michigan, there were so many little roadside spots pointing out a Father Baraga's Cross it got to be kind of humorous.

Just did some searching. It's a vehicle! I haven't pinned down why 'Hennepin'.
