Any Doctor Who fans here?

The 4th season started here in the States last week, and I know it's already been on in the UK for a while - just curious to hear what everyone thinks of the new season so far. PLEASE - no spoilers, though!

My thoughts - Of all the companions they could have chosen for the Doctor, did it really have to be Catherine Tate? I'm not a fan of her comedy, and from what i've seen so far on the show i'm not liking her character. Maybe i'm still holding out hope that Rose will come back. [blush]
 
during the last 3-4 shows of last season. I was snagged by the cleverness of it and great story lines. This season so far, however, has me feeling a bit flat. The Titanic episode seemed to be desperate and trite. I dunno... I'll have to see how it goes. But so far, I'm not impressed.
 
I hated to see Martha go. Rose too, for that matter. I like Catherine Tate's show, but I really don't like her lack of chemistry with David Tennent. And the first show of season 4 was really quite dull. The Vesuvius episode looks a little better.
 
Donna and the Doctor. They are getting along brilliantly. I much prefer her over the blandness that was Martha for most of the last season. OK, I'm in the UK so ahead of you guys but this is the best its been since Rose.

I like she is older, behves as she does. A bit more adult but with a sharp sense of humour and a conscience. She is bouncing well of Tennant. Its made clear from the first episode there is no attraction between them (or even a one way thing) which is refreshing also.

Dr Who is doing well and will continue to do so I think. I'm more worried about possible Torchwood changes than I am about Dr Who tbh *cries*
 
It made me cry so hard! I'm holding out hope for this season, although like most everyone else I wasn't crazy about the season premiere.
 
Doctor Who just makes me happy, from the first note of the theme song. It makes me giddy that it's back and being handled by Who-geeks. God bless Russell T. Davies, even if he doesn't believe in Him.

I adored Christopher Eccleston, and worried about and was wary of David Tennant and didn't watch the DVD's for a long time ... then went on a binge while I was out of work a couple of months ago. And now I love DT even more than Christopher Eccleston. (I've been muttering "Allons-y" at traffic for years, so, well! [cool])

I like Donna well enough; it'll be nice to have a Companion who doesn't bring with her (or him) the complication of fancying the Doctor. I mean, as far as I can remember in the entire original 20-odd year run of the show, there was never one kiss, never the least whiff of sex. If Sarah Jane Smith was in love with the Doctor, as more than a marvelous traveling companion and friend, it went over my teenaged head. So it's wise, I think, that after Rose, Jack, AND Martha, we have a companion with wanderlust, not... never mind.

Although she is a bit obnoxious. In a not altogether bad way. I've never seen Catherine Tate's show, so all I have to go by is "Runaway Bride" and the first episode; I can live with her. Since I don't have to, you know, live with her.
 
We've watched the first couple of this season's episodes and are enjoying them quite a bit. I think Catherine Tate was a good choice of companion and was hoping she'd appear in the series again after the "Runaway Bride" episode. Donna's certainly different from Martha and Rose, both of whom I also like for different reasons. She's lowbrow, bossy, and kind of annoying, but that's what makes her so amusing to watch in action. I like it that she's appointed herself to be the Doctor's conscience, whether he wants it or not. The fact that she's a normal looking, 40-ish woman and not a slender young cutie is kind of refreshing. And, as others have mentioned, she doesn't seem to be in love with the Doctor, or at least not yet.

As for the "Starship Titanic" episode, didn't they basically lift that idea from Douglas Adams' game?

I thought the exact same thing about that episode when I first saw it!

And who knows - maybe i'll grow to like Donna as the season goes on. I wasn't crazy about Martha in the beginning either, but grew to like her.
 
Keep watching - she's really coming into her own in the next few episodes. I'm thoroughly enjoying the new season, but then since they brought it back I've become a bit of a fan - read "obsessed".

Mainly, though, I think Ten is just wonderful. [blush]
 
But the online commentary referred explicitly to Poseidon as a source and inspiration. S4 proper is better than "Voyage of the Damned" I think - it wasn't the strongest Xmas episode yet (my vote for that goes to Tennant's first appearance in "The Christmas Invasion".)
 
I think that has to be the word. As the Doctor you have to watch him; when I've seen him be himself in things like DW Confidential or chat shows he seems to be so sweet and generous and having such a good time it's just irresistible. Although, as Donna pointed out, he is a skinny strip of nothing.
 
but I just don't buy David Tennant as the Doctor. I don't see any depth to him, just a set of superficial quirks and mannerisms that are supposed to add up to a character (and I'm definitely NOT among the fans who find him attractive!). I liked Eccleston much, much better. Since Tennant took over, the episodes I've enjoyed most have been the ones in which the Doctor has the least to do (Blink was outstanding, for instance).

I'll reserve judgment on Donna till I've seen more of her episodes. I do think it's promising that she has no romantic interest in the Doctor -- that's one element of the new series that I detest! (Along with the incredibly ugly, tacky TARDIS interior.) I never liked Rose, but Martha was quite good; I was sorry to see her go, because I liked her better than the Doctor.

In case anyone's wondering why I'm a fan of the new series, given all these criticisms, it's mainly the writing (excellent!!) and the casting of secondary, guest parts. But if I hadn't already been a huge fan of the old series, I doubt the new one would have hooked me.
 
I loved, loved, loved Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor, and was very sad when he left - but I have to say David Tennant has surprised me. He is the first actor who has, to my mind, really conveyed the alienness of the Doctor. There have been times when I've truly believed that he is not human, brilliant beyond our comprehension, and . . . a bit of a demi-god really. In the second season when Louis XIV said "I'm the King of France!' and Tennant answered "Yeah? Well, I'm the Lord of Time," it rang true: a Time Lord way, way outranks an earthly king.

I also thought they'd never outdo "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" of the "first" season, but both "Blink" and "Family of Blood" blew me away. Superb writing.

I miss Rose. I felt sorry for Martha, and I'm glad that Donna isn't attracted to the Doctor. I like her spunk, but I liked Rose's brand of spunk better. Can't wait for the episodes where she's back.

BTW I'm in the US, but the episodes go up on youtube the day after they show - a stopgap for me until I can rent or buy the DVDs for myself!
 
seen him in the "Who Do You Think You Are" series? It was on UKTV on foxtel a few months ago, he was adorable, especially when they dragged him out in the rain to visit "the family seat" LOL Made jokes about needing a Tardis to handle the terrain and the weather [laugh]
 
I probably started watching about the same time as gramma - though slightly different cause I'm in Auz. We still don't have the next season yet! I'm still waiting! I have an interesting video for you Dr Who fans, made by a comedy TV show in Auz. Hopefully it works. Just pick your player, internet speed, and then select the one that says 'fan of dr who'. Watch and be amused.
