Another Tolkien letter going under the hammer

In my haste to post the link to the newspaper article, I neglected to post this link to the auction itself. Follow the link for some of the text of the letter as well as other details — and best of all, an excellent, legible photo of one page of the letter! The auction at Bonhams in London is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, November 4.

Anyone have £2,000 – 3,000 I can borrow? [;)]

who had his letter valued on an Antiques Roadshow program I saw within the past few months. IIRC, that was the story he told on the program, that he had written to ask when the third part was going to be published. On the program, he said he would not sell it. Perhaps, at his age, he thought he might as well cash it in.

Tolkien is repeating something John Roberts has written to him, about Smeagol/Gollum being a detestable creature, and agreeing with it but modifying that stance by stating that he is also an object of pity.

Yes, the missing diacritical is curious...

Thanks for this, visualweasel!
