Ofcourse he is playing a minor role.. but shouldn't he be some more certain?

He's possibly the most recognisable and memorable aspect of the entire LotR trilogy. I suppose they could work around his absence (unlike with live-action characters, they could make the Gollum model look exactly the same and just get similar actors to do mocap and voicework) but it just wouldn't be the same. Even if there's a scheduling conflict I'm sure he'd choose The Hobbit over anything else that might come up.

I can't imagine for a minute that they wouldn't want him for Gollum but all the negotations for the various actors must take time, especially when they're all round the world.

I recorded Something for the Weekend because I assumed the Hobbit might come up in conversation. He was there primarily to promote a new film he has coming out. He also mentioned he is currently writing a film based on the first female mountaineers.
It seemed to me that he knew everything was finally going ahead with the Hobbit but didn't elaborate further. I expect all the detail about production updates and filming schedules would usually come from an actors agent, so I suppose he knows as much as his agent knows. He definitely still seems 'attached' to the project though.

...just to satisfy my own curiosity about this one I found it on the BBC iPlayer.
Andy Serkis was asked about the Hobbit in the closing minutes of the programme and he said "yes, yes apparently it's all going ahead - I don't have any dates or anything" but it sounded very upbeat and in context it felt as though both he and the interviewer were assuming he was involved. They were busy cooking lunch at the time and there were several others in the studio so it wasn't like a regular interview.

It was reported a long time ago that they were both attached to the movie. Just because they haven't announced their signing yet doesn't mean they aren't in process. They have to get the contracts, presumably their agents or lawyers look them over, they negotiate for any changes they want, and then they sign....and then the studio makes the announcement when it decides to. Just to put things in perspective, casting announcements for LOTR were fairly spread out, and they didn't have boycott delays and complications to deal with.

Paranoia is running rampant these days, but I really don't think this is something to worry about; there's still plenty of time for the desired cast to come together.

British Equity have still to announce that they have lifted the ban on UK actors taking part in the Hobbit, I'm sure it is just a matter of time but Andy would not want to place himself in a difficult position with his union. This may be the same reason why Sir Ian has been quiet, he is noted to be more pro union.
