Ahem... how did we miss this? The Hobbit in 3D is being discussed.

So I go on my weekly visit to www.comingsoon.net and see that Guillermo del Toro has said that conversations on The Hobbit being in 3D have taken place. And that he said it HERE! I come here daily and Coming Soon gave me the heads up. Apparently it was one of the last replies of a thread, and apparently not many people did see it, since there wasn't any buzz here and no post in the Home Site.

So here it is. Bringing some attention to a rather relevant topic. [;)]

And it's not my intention to stir up a discussion we've had for years... however, it did seem like a valuable piece of info most of us missed...

That's where I saw it also, Compa. One of our alert readers still viewing older topics and/or the owners of sites like that are also readers on TORN and added it. I linked the original message board to the story on the front page (where Guillermo made the comment) but probably better to have a new one started.

Thanks CompaMighty!

in the machinations of a non-bumping board.[laugh]

Given Avatar's success, as predicted, 3D is squarely (cubically?) on the table. What if How to Train Your Dragon (same genre as TH) does exceptionally well? Will there then be talks to make a (computer) animated Hobbit after all?

IOW, I wonder how much of the budget 3D treatment eats up and how much pressure to go 100% cgi comes along it?

I am one of those who doesn't routinely check old threads.

I really would like to see The Hobbit in 3D. I don't intend to purchase a 3D TV or disc player, though, so if/when I am ready for the Home Media of this movie (soooo many years away!) it might seem less of an experience --going backwards, as it were.

My sister is blind in one eye which governs my opinion of everything 3D. She would obviously not be able to enjoy the 3-D ness just as she can't see 3D Avatar. Having seen Avatar, I did feel it a little disconcerting for the camera to be telling me where to focus - I found myself trying to look at the peripherals. Hopefully GDT will stun us with something that will allow us to choose where our focus lied.

This is a bit of a disability-discriminatory issue - any thoughts?
Ian Holm for Bilbo still(bo)

I enjoy 3D. But I have always advocated for being given the choice of the two different formats. That would make this an okay issue for your sister as well as for the many who get physical upsets (i.e. headaches) from watching 3D, while those of us who want it and have no problem with it could enjoy our 3D.

my intention was not to question your news... they are very valuable, and well done i must say finding this [:)]

PJ/GDT are I'd guess already going to be given a pretty free hand but might going 3D be a good way to avoid any studio interference? give them one more thing that should help draw crowds and they'll be willing to let a slighgtly less comerical story pass unhidered?

It seems like it could be a used to set the films appart more from LOTR aswell given that they share many rather similar enviroments. The Hobbit is afterall very "enclosed", the shire section takes place IN bagend so much as around it then your into the trolls lair, goblins caves, Beorns house, Mirkwood etc which seems ideal for 3D.

Perhaps it could given do for 3D what LOTR did for CGI? take a previously "showey" device and use it for the benefit of the story. Tolkiens work is afterall very detailed and spastically aware.

One of the truly great things about the LotR trilogy was that, despite all the advanced special effects, they had a classic, timeless cinema feel to them - as if they had been done in the time of Ben Hur or Lawrence of Arabia. I want a traditional cinematic experience with these films. If PJ & GDT hope to seamlessly integrate these films in with the Trilogy, I hope they realize 3D is NOT the way to go.

in barrels, wound up in spider web... imagine the dwarfs' noses sticking out of the threads rendered in glorious 3D.

Thanks for THE HOBBIT in 3D. I know that the continued discussions will lead to heckuva party for all of us.

It has been a long time coming, but I am glad that it is at least semi-official now.

It is going to be awesome! And no, I am not going to rub it in. I am a fan of THE HOBBIT as much as the next guy/gal on here. Bring it on!!

I am sure it was an unavoidable subject. I do believe that the idea has been ruled out. If there is a 3-d release it will be a five movie conversion at a later date. A 3-D Hobbit prequel to a 2-D Lord of the Rings Trilogy just does not make sense.

I mean, "enquiries from above... no heavy leaning. Just enquiries," sounds to me like a couple of guys from the studio passed GDT in the hall and asked what he thinks about 3D for TH on their way to the snack machine. [cool]

There is no indication it is official, simply that it is being discussed. But we're sure many ideas have been discussed and discarded. And even some things that will be included during production will be left out in post production. Trouble with shooting in 3D or not is that likely it is very costly to change your mind halfway through.

Plus he said that there have been inquiries, he never at any point says "That'd be a good idea". The AVATAR business was a matter of whether it does good or not, that there would be inquiries, not that he would consider it. Obviously by now he's thought it over, but nonetheless he hasn't publicly shown an interest or distaste. So I wouldn't think much of it.
