A Possible Glimps of Smaug from Alan Lee

Notice how the image fits the description that was so hotly debated a couple of weeks ago.

Long very serpentine body. Wings a good way back on the body and appear to be able to be folded tight against the back. Eyes deep set under prominent brow ridges. The clincher would be the legs but they are hidden in the painting.

I can't really grasp what the body looks like (or I may need stronger glasses![sorry]). I don't have that book. Does anyone have a link to a larger image?[:)]

That poster on Reddit who claimed working on the movie did say that Smaug most closely resembled Alan's version. What I think we're likely to see is a Smaug that combines the morphology of Alan's version and the colouration and scale textures of John's version.

Here are links to several other images of Smaug by Alan Lee which could easily serve as inspiration for actual shots in the movie:

In this illustration, it doesn't look like Smaug has forearms, and I want him to in the film. Other than that, the design's great.

He was talking about how happy he was with it. And weren't we all hoping that PJ would use whatever he left rather than start over?

Guillermo del Toro, Alan Lee, John Howe, Daniel Falconer, the rest of Weta Work Shop, Weta Digital and I am sure Peter was actively involved.

and it's so fun to see something so familiar! The wings are more like a dragonfly, imho. I'm so used to Smaug being more beefy-looking... but this resembles Tolkien's worm-esque look.

*twitch* This is going to be so fun!!! :D

I imagine him to be kind of big and beefy instead of long and lanky like that.

PS. I just auditioned for the elf extras... I pray I get a call back some day

I so Hope you DO! get the job.
I'm purfectly able to see Smaug as a Snake(Worm) with wings...Anything to appear Different from the TOO Many Dragons we have seen in TOO Many Movies.

His voice is the bigg question? Please be anyone but a familiar Voice like Bill Nightly, or Leonard Nemoy! I magine a Voice that reamins a Mystery until Long After the Movies Comes out.

Because that's how Tolkien illustrated him, and that's the impression I get from the descriptions in the book:

Smaug lay, with wings folded like an immeasurable bat, turned partly on one side, so that the hobbit could see his underparts and his long pale belly crusted with gems and fragments of gold from his long lying on his costly bed.

He thrust his head in vain at the little hole, and then coiling his length together, roaring like thunder underground, he sped from his deep lair through its great door...
