A Idea about Weapons

Here is an idea that I suggested the other day in the WiFi chat about weapons and connections from to LOTR from The Hobbit: Evangeline Lily said that Turiel has a bow & arrow and two daggers. What if they try to connect those weapons to LOTR? How would they do this? Easy, by having her character die (she isn't exactly a real character from the books, so killing her off wouldn't raise too many problems) and Legolas takes and uses her weapons as a tribute. This would explain the origin of his weapons and be similar to Aragorn taking Boromir arm guards. It would be a small scene that might for if Orlando Bloom is only making a cameo. Legolas uses a Mirkwood bow up until the Fellowship reaches Lorien, could this be another bow that he received as a gift/tribute? He also has his two long knives. Sounds pretty similar to the two daggers that Turiel will be wielding. It could also have no connection between the two and be simply the standard weaponry of Mirkwood.

An idea that I think has a much higher probability of being true is that Gloin's axe is the same one that Gimli used throughout the trilogy. Check out the links (I couldn't get the pictures to post) to the pictures of Gloin and Gimli below and compare the axes. They look pretty similar to me. Gimli's axe could very well have been a family heirloom that was passed down from his father. The picture of Gloin doesn't give a clear view of his axe, but if you watch the trailer again (as if you need any other reason) pause the video at about 1:59 when the dwarves are attacking the trolls. You can get a pretty good view of what seems to be Gloin and his axe and they look awfully similar. I wouldn't say it is definitive, but I think it has a decent chance of being the same axe. What do you guys think?

The idea of Legolas taking Tauriel's arms up is interesting, It wold certainly be an interesting end to their involvement in the films. Hard to make the call right now though, since we don't know exactly how either will fit into the film. However assuming Tauriel is not anyone;s love interest (certainly not Legolas, thank god), I'd say them having a companions-in-arms relationship sounds reasonable and plausible.

And the axe Gloin is wielding is definitely the one Gimli has in Fellowship. There was a clearer view of it in the publicity photos of the dwarves. It's in the image of Oin and Gloin below:

I know it's not cannon by any means, but I remember that the book "Lord of the Rings: Arms and Armor" speculated that the double-headed axe Gimli suddenly acquired in Moria was originally Balin's. Apparently it was buried with Balin in his mausoleum. And after the Cave Troll busted it open, Gimli was able to get it and use it on some Goblin skulls.

Anyone else think they will they might show it? If they do, it would be a nice (but not necessary) little nod to the Trilogy (and a pretty excellent supplemental book).

And if they did show it, how would they show it? Would Balin be taking it on the quest to Erebor, using it to dispatch Goblins, Wargs, Spiders, and the like? Or is it possible he will arm himself with it after Smaug has been slain and the treaure needs to be "protected?"

Man, it's speculation like this that really brings out one's inner geek in a good way. And I like that PJ and his team have given us full reason to believe this stuff might happen![:)]
 
The book's called "LOTR: Weapons and Warfare." Silly me.

But if you're a fan of the films (and the books for that matter), and you thought the work Weta did creating the armies of Middle Earth was impressive, you should check this out. It's written like a very entertaining study on the weapons, armor, construction techniques, and tactics of the different factions, including the obscure ones like the Army of the Dead and the Corsairs of Umbar.
 
...was only used in Moria. After they got to Lorien, he was given a new one. I see no point in trying to establish a pedigree for the old bow.
 
I remember it mostly for pointing out the peacock design on Legolas' quiver and for presenting a Fell Beast's claw as a fossil unearthed at the Pelennor Fields. Also I used to use it as reference when I was thirteen and trying to draw swords a lot. Weapons and Warfare and the RotK artbook were fantastic.
 
That would be a good way to expand on the history of MiddleEarth.Maybe Legolas is Tauriel's love interest.???? Who knows.It'd be a shame for such a handsome elf to be single for eternity.lol
 
In the book, at least, any weapons the Dwarves had would have been confiscated by the goblins (Bilbo's dagger was overlooked and Gandalf recovered Orchrist when he slew the Great Goblin). Beorn had had to resupply them before he sent them on to Mirkwood. Perhaps the films will play out differently. In any case, any gear taken by the Wood-elves could simply be returned following the Battle of the Five Armies, after peace is restored between the Dwarves, Men and Elves.
 
I'd love if the axe was like an unspoken heirloom. Perhaps in some flashback we could see Fúndin wield it. And when the line is ended Gimli picks it up.

We know Gimli also has an heirloom axe from Gloin. How cool [:)]
 
but the only problem that I see is that in the pictures there are of Balin, he seems to be wielding a sword. It would be possible that the axe would be something that he would acquire at Erebor when the dwarves arm themselves with the best weapons and armor.

Such WONDERS to Behold, could be an under-estimated GEM in the Plotline...

I think the Elves of Mirkwood have standard weaponry, and it's true, Legolas only uses his Mirkwood-issue bow until Lorien. Good thoughts, however.

Certainly Gimli/Gloin's weaponry would be similar or perhaps handed down. That seems more likely.

These little touch points between the two film series are interesting to speculate on.
 
Especially with Gloin and Gimli sharing axes.... sort of feeds on Bard's Black Arrow.

I don't want Tauriel killed off, though. *sigh* I haven't even met her yet! ;)
