A bit of help, please-and-thank-you?

Greetings, TORn lovers!
I'm up to my eyeballs busy w/grad school and single parenting but I had a bit of a windfall and need some help with an item:
My old Gandalf the Grey costume came apart when I last tried to use it acting for some children. I have a seamstress making a new costume for December's opening of The Hobbit, but I need a staff. I haven't found any for sale online (and this version is different as all of you know from the one from The Fellowship of the Ring's Gandalf the Grey stave). Anyone with a lead or who happens to be a staffmaker I should be indebted to you for help getting this vital item for December. I have Glamdring already so this is the last piece of this puzzle I need to hopefully reprise what was a very nice reception (standing ovation) of when I appeared at the midnight opening of 'Fellowship' all those years ago.

Anyway, if you have access to a forest that is not a protected space (say on farmland) it should be simple enough to find a standing dead sapling (or an average sized sumac works nicely). Basically all you do is gently pull up the dead tree, trying to take as much root with it as possible... Gandalf's staff is an upside down tree.

Good to 'see' you as well, my friend! My grandmother passed last year 1 month after her 100th b-day and this was a wholly unexpected (for family 'politic' reasons) windfall.
Gandalf's staff from Fellowship is indeed an upside down tree, but the photos from the new movie reveal a very different staff for him and in any case I haven't time with my studies to fashion one in the month and three weeks I have left.

the on-screen version I don't care if it's official or not. Glamdring is 'official' and it was pretty hideously expensive. I'd seen an E-bay thing and I never think of E-bay as new but recycled stuff so it didn't occur to me to check it for something for the upcoming movie. Thank you.

But really. Grandma was a centenarian (by one month). Everyone she knew was 'gone'. It was time.

No worries on the staff. If I *have* to I'll pay up to United Cutlery, but I'm hoping to manage much more cheaply for good quality product. We'll see.
 
100 years is amazing! Having a windfall gift from her is such a blessing.

As others have said, I think ebay or another online product is your most expedient hope... or you can check with an local craftspeople and maybe commission something. Check your local Craigslist for people who do crafts/woodwork like this... or Amish furniture makers who often make beds, chairs, etc. right from intact unprocessed wood. I'll bet they can crank out something very fast.

I pulled a 6 ft sampling with a 2" diameter this past Spring, soaked the root system and trained it to reach off to one side like Gandalf's first Fellowship staff. It does take time I know you don't have, but I get a little thrill every time I hold it. :)

I'm CERTAIN I mentioned my grandmother's passing, as it was 15 months ago now! But again, thank you!
The sad thing is is that my brother is a professional artist - he WON the city of Baltimore's contest a couple years ago when they were celebrating Edgar Allen Poe and as a result his art the city used was an answer on Jeopardy! But all my life even when I've tried to commission him he hasn't done any work for me.
Ah well. I've asked his wife to plead on my behalf and am looking into local craftsmen. One way or the other I'll have 'the look' and will send pics to gramma or Magpie or someone who can size them properly for TORn to post.
T'will be a BLAST!

I'd go hunting around the local trails for a likely branch from a cottonwood or willow tree, and make my own. The curves wouldn't match "exactly", but it would be real in the way a store-bought staff wouldn't be.
 
I might try that. But while I could probably recognise a willow I wouldn't know a cottonwood if it bit me. And I do want it to look far closer to what Sir Ian will be wielding than what I could possibly fashion, being entirely un-artistic as I am. [blush]
I've put the word out to the local SCA populace as well as my FB friends and it appears that one of them may have a lead. [:)] Should be LOTS of fun!

so recent, I thought it must be a different Grandmother--which makes no sense at all, now that I think about it.[blush][unsure]
