Off into the West........long gone....
Talk...naahh...too much lingering shadow in the world...jealousy over recognition in the great war, love triangle....that bar wench Rosie with rumors of infidelity, Merry seeking to be the True King of the Hobbits etc...you can imagine the potential issues....the Sackville Baggins' are actually manipulating things on both sides.

I think they'd just talk it out like well-manerred Hobbits, but if they did get into pitched combat, then Sam would win. No matter how strong or powerful you think you are, the one with heart and determination will always win (usually), but in this case Sam would definitly win.

Naw, I'd go with Sam. He has already shown himself able to take on foes larger than himself. Merry's good at sneaking around behind and cutting tendons to soften a big guy up for someone else, or cutting off a hand or two of orcs trying very hard to capture him alive, but after years of being Mayor, Sam would not be so easily tricked.
I doubt they'd go at it with swords, however, being old buddies. They'd probably have a knock-down drag-out brawl. Merry'd try to throw his size around, but shorter Sam would have the advantage of a lower center of gravity. Merry'd have the reach, but Sam's quick; he'd dive under Merry's arms and go for a stomach-punch. The stomach-punch gets larger opponents every time.

When it comes to a hand-to-hand fight. Having been on a wrestling team, the stockier fighter with a lower center of gravity will usually take the win.
