Normans or the Rohirrim Can't Post

Both seem to have similar tactics, and the lesser Rohirrim, (or all in the way I visualized from the book) have similar equipment. It'd be a heck of a fight.

Horses Trump Footsoldiers [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd bet on the Rohirrim. Among the Normans, only the nobles can afford horses, whereas the Rohirrim are all cavalry. Also, the Rohirrim have mastered the long-bow, which historically bested the Norman's easier but less accurate cross-bows.

My website http://www.dreamdeer.grailmedia.com offers fanfic, and message-boards regarding intentional community or faerie exploration.

Rohirrim by far [In reply to] Can't Post

The main thing for me is that the two biggest battles for each were, respectively:

Normans: The Battle of Hastings
Rohirrim: The Battle of the Pelennor Fields

And.....

Who they fought against:

Normans: Saxons (Englishmen) who were more skilled than orcs, but still not the greatest fighters. And yes, their great cavalry charge did require a lot of courage to go directly against flying arrows and spears without wavering, but then again, when William the Conqueror was presumed dead, everyone started to flee, including the horsemen.

Rohirrim: Thousands of orcs, twenty Mumakil with Haradrim archers riding on their backs. The Rohirrim charged bravely, 6000 against odds of 10 to 1. And in the book, they too faced cavalry, while the Normans didn't. And they fought the behemoth oliphaunt Mumaks, which were beyond scary, how about extremely terrifying beyond anything anyone can imagine. Picture a 50 foot tall elephant staring you down, and that's what the Rohirrim saw, yet they didn't flee. They were prepared to die instead of saving themselves.

Outcome: Rohirrim obliterates the Normans.

To be completely honest... [In reply to] Can't Post

That post was ill considered. I realy was only thinking about cavalry V cavalry. I'm quite certain that the Normans were the inspiration for the Rohirrim, and in my lack-of-sleep stupor (I'm on swing-shift, so that's a constant) I just wondered which cavalry would win. But then there is the concept of the Norman shield wall, but pikes weren't back in big use untill the mid 13th C. So all and all, the Rohirrim do have the advantage.

Note: I should have said, The horsemen started to flee. I just didn't know this was just about horsemen. But if it is, then the Rohirrim definitely win. Because anyway, the cavalry of the Normans did charge the Saxons, and did waver at the end, then came back and finished off the Saxons, but if the Rohirrim had wavered, all would have been lost!!! We don't even have to talk about foot soldiers here, because simply put, Rohirrim vs. Oliphaunts, and Normans vs. slightly primitive men. There it is.

Outcome: Rohirrim obliterates the Normans.

You need a hobbit option in your poll. What's Middle Earth without the hobbits? And if your site is mainly about military encounters, consider that hobbits are tricksy, nimble, stealthy, and have remarkably good aim. They might not be natural warmongers, but they often do well in a pinch.
