Sauron with the Ring or without? Sauron in the First Age or the Second Age or the Third Age? One on one or with their respective armies? In space or in Middle-earth? I think Sauron in the First Age and Second Age could defeat Vader one on one. Sauron in the Third Age, without the Ring, could not defeat Vader in one on one. But if he had reclaimed the Ring he could. Armies make everything fluid, so it's best to consider them one on one.

I guess, I'd vote for Sauron, if he had the ring. W/out the ring...well we all know in one on one face off he'd be pretty useless...

And I think of this battle in particular, and others like it, as perhaps the reason the Arena exists in the first place. But, it really is not a contest when you get down to it, for several reasons. The first, and most simple of all, is that Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker (and he was powerful as Darth only for a brief moment, the rest of the time, when he was maimed machine Darth, he had much less power...Lucas is clear on this) is a man, and Sauron is a Maia of the Ainur. So physiologically, Sauron would be too much for Vader, force and all, to handle. Let us say, for the sake of this battle, that both are at the absolute peak of their powers. That means that Vader is still portrayed (quite lamely, I might add...whither art thou James Earl Jones!) by Hayden Christensen. Sauron was most likely at the greatest physical extent of his powers soon after the creation of the Ring in the Second Age. At this time he still had the ability to not only appear as a menacing Dark Lord if he wished it, but to appear as the fair and noble Annatar., In such a form he was able even to fool Celebrimbor, grandson of Feanor, and the only two characters whom we're told specifically did NOT trust him were Gil-Galad and Elrond. I like to believe that Cirdan and Galadriel (and perhaps Celeborn, too), members of the White Council and no slouches themselves, were able to see through the guise, but we're not specifically told that they were. Then again, we're told that Gil-Galad and Elrond did not trust Annatar, BUT they did accept the rings that Celebrimbor created and that were bound to Sauron's power. Anyway, in such a battle Sauron could merely come out as Annatar and speak softly to Darth Vader. Vader, who was before wheedled by Palpatine, would almost certainly believe this fair-seeming, noble, and powerful lord. Sauron then would have him in his power and could do whatever he wished. But, even were Sauron in the form of Dark Lord, he'd still rock Vader's human world. Powerful as Darth Vader was, he was a man, while Sauron is what we'd liken to an angel. A fallen angel, yes, but angel still. The Dark Lord of the Sith would be no match for the ORIGINAL Dark Lord: Sauron the Great, Lord of the Rings. Lava ended up being Vader's bane, and it would be no different this time as Sauron cast the once menacing Lord of the Sith into crack of Doom from Sammath Naur. Vader may find my lack of faith disturbing, but I'll side with the Dark Lord of Mordor and come out the victor for it.,

What? Again. How do we know he is useless? Gandalf says "Black in mightier still!", Mr T says NO mortal could withold the One Ring from him, whether they had 'mastered' it or not, if they were within shouting distance. Sauron would TOAST Vader, no matter Sauron's incarnation (presuming he was in an incarnation that physical form), and no matter what stage Vader was in his life. Sauron would toast The Emperor or Yoda for the same reasons. Sauron was a 'divine' being. Jedi and bad Jedi are puny mortals. Period. Cheers Padster I guess, I'd vote for Sauron, if he had the ring. W/out the ring...well we all know in one on one face off he'd be pretty useless...

Any Maia would win against any Jedi. While the distinct powers and abilities of the Maiar are never fully disclosed, they are no doubt stronger than lightsabers and the abilities a Jedi gains from the force. Plus, 90% of a Jedi's fighting abilities are physical, which a Maia, especially Sauron with the ring, is able to transcend.

Sauron wins easily, but the match up was not fair to Vader. Vader V/S Aragorn or Elrond would be much for even.
