Aragorn teases Faramir, saying Eowyn loved him first...

therefore Faramir was getting the King's rejects. This angers Faramir and a fight ensues. One-on-one, because I doubt either of them would let anyone else get involved. But I'd give the win to Aragorn, easily.

on if it comes down to a One-on-One, or if it comes down to the army that each commander convinces to follow him. One-on-One: Aragorn, no question. (Sorry Faramir!) Army vs. Army: I doubt that the two of them would let anyone else get involved, but if they did i don' know who would win. On one hand, you have Aragorn with all of his Dunedain buddies, not to mention Legolas, Gimli, Elladan and Elrohir. On the other, you have Faramir, who happens to have some very loyal followers in the city. Faramir is loved by most of Gondor's finest soldiers (and even Gondor's less-than-finest soldiers), while Aragorn would have at the time been known as just the "Captain of the Rangers". So if it came down to an army, I would think Faramir, because no one in the city would have let some random ranger guy beat up their favorite captain. As for why they are fighting... hows this: Aragorn thinks that Arwen is gone forever, and since he is about to become King he wants a Queen. So he decides to take Eowyn up on her offer of love. Faramir finds out and challanges Aragorn to a duel. Winner gets the girl! (Fortunatly for Faramir Arwen showed up and so he got Eowyn anyway)

it depends on how many soldiers would follow Faramir

I think some of Gondor's soldiers would follow Aragorn. Maybe the stupid ones who agreed with Denethor about Faramir. And I think that each of the elves and the Dunedain would be "worth" more than one of Gondor's soldiers. So it would really be decided on how many people Faramir got to follow him. Plus, I don't think Eomer would be willing to sit on the sidelines, so you have to factor in all the Rohirrim. All in all, it's a good thing Arwen comes back.

about the Rohirrim. Obviously Eomer would be on Aragorn's side, which would even things out a whole lot. Good point!

Gondor and Rohan are long-standing allies. For all his personal qualities, Aragorn is still just Captain of the Rangers, and Eomer's the King of Rohan now, allied politically with Faramir. Plus, they've known each other, or at least known of each other, and live next door. If Faramir called on that alliance, Eomer would follow him.

Then definitely Faramir. I agree with Ghills that Rohan wouldn't go galloping to Aragorn's aid. The Oath of Eorl isn't one to brush off lightly. Imrahil though seems pretty intent on having Aragorn on the throne, but will he defy his Lord Steward and nephew?
