Different perspectives... [In reply to] Can't Post

Alan Lee's artwork has a more dreamy, romantic look, whereas John Howe's leans more towards realism and has a harsher quality and more action going on. Personally, I'm a romantic at heart, so Alan appeals to me more (I am enamored with his sketches!), but when it comes to trying to picture what Middle-earth is like, I tend to stick with John (and some Ted Nasmith in there, for good measure).

A third competitor [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I do like Allan Lee but sometimes his drawings are too sketchy if that makes sense so I would probably go with John Howe but in my opinion my favorite Tolkien artist is Ted Nasmith. His landscapes are amazing! In fact I have bought the Ted Nasmith illustrated Tolkien calender two years in a row.

What happened when Legolas and Aragorn road with Eomer in the van.
Aragorn: Eomer, Legolas has his bow on my side of the seat!
Legolas: Well Aragorn keeps slapping me while practicing his "heroic" poses.
Eomer: Don't make me turn this van around.

John Howe [In reply to] Can't Post

not that Alan Lee is bad, I love his art as well.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

I'm stuck ... [In reply to] Can't Post

I like both of their designs. I'll side with Alan Lee purely because his illustrations are featured in more of the copies of Tolkien's works that I own. However, John Howe's work was my introduction to visualising Middle-Earth in 'The Hobbit'. Personally, I cannot decide.

Very nice Showdown... I go with the fabulous Mr. Howe [In reply to] Can't Post

Alan Lee is my least favorite of the three main illustrators. Not that I don't like him, it's just that I like Howe and Nasmith better.

Of course Nasmith should stick to landscape and architecture... comparing Howe's Ulmo with Nasmith's makes the point quite clear.

John Howe is definitely the one I like the most. My laptop's desktop has Glorfindel battling Morgoth. It has been for two years. Smile

I think we should at least mention... [In reply to] Can't Post

Greg and Tim Hildebrandt's work as well.

But it's a dead draw for Howe and Lee for me. Different styles, but the one I prefer depends on my mood.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Smile I find it hard to say which i think is actually better, but I think I prefer alan lee, purely due to the more airy look his drawings have. I like to think of Middle Earth as being gentle and relatively untouched by evil (apart from a few bits of course!), and I like the way alan lee portrays this. I also kind of like the fact that his drawings still leave something to the imagination- I mean, they are not completely precise and photograph-like, which means you can still interpret them yourself. Whereas I find john howe's a lot more exact. This is, of course, not a bad thing, and I do find his art more helpful in actually picturing people and places, but I like the slightly more magical look of Lee's.
Just as a complete side-issue, these are two of my favourite pictures/drawings of Middle Earth ever (there are thousands of others which I also love, but these in particular capture my imagination) Note that both actually by Ted Nasmith, not Howe or Lee...

oh this is hard! [In reply to] Can't Post

Alan Lee has the talent to draw so beautiful pictures of the fantastic landscape of middle-earth and of those buildings with a breathtaking architectual style with so much details in it that his art really is phenomenal and ,like I think, inimitable.
Apart from this I love how realistic Alan Lee paints!

John Howe has the talent to paint Tolkien`s characters in a way in which they seem to be alive. In the following I admit some pictures painted by him. They really do look vivid, don't they?

Well,I can``t really say,who I`d prefer, but if I had to decide I would say Alan Lee because I just adore his wonderful arts of Minas Tirith, Rivendell etc...

Thanks for this Wink

Actually, Lee is my least favorite. [In reply to] Can't Post

Howe and Nasmith are my favorites, with a healthy dose of the less Kiebler-elfy looking Hildebrandts thrown in. I usually don't care for Nasmith's faces either, though. I guess I prefer a more "realistic" approach to the "dreamy" that is Lee.
