So with all the controversy about ROP why don’t Amazon try easing the tension slightly by releasing a proper full length trailer which demonstrates some decent characterization? An insight into the drama might help to indicate a level of quality and understanding of the legendarium and ease the fears of some of the naysayers (of which I confess to be one). Unless of course they are genuinely concerned at how this show is going to be received? GOT was a massive success because it had an excellent story with well fleshed out characterization and drama. I was so buzzed at the news of this happening when it was first announced but after the very short and, let’s face it, highly controversial teaser, I am fearful of a bit of a disaster to be honest.

If Amazon's marketing team follows a similar chronology as they did with Wheel of Time S1 last year, we will probably see a full, two-minute trailer in mid-June. It's also possible they'll wait and release it at, or close to, SDCC, but that's not until July 21–24 this year, which seems a bit late to release the first non-teaser trailer for a show that premieres on September 2. So I'm expecting something next month. I imagine Amazon has some sort of data-driven or data-informed method for determining their marketing timeline. I wouldn't expect them to deviate from it because of an entirely predictable backlash from a few different subsets of the fandom. And I say this as someone who made her return to TORn with a post titled "little doubt left to give the benefit of," so I'm not arguing in defense of the show right now. But if ROP is going to succeed, it needs to attract viewers who never even hear about controversies in online fan spaces. There are far more of them than there are of us, so all movie and TV marketing has to keep them in mind.

Surprised They're Waiting So Long

A full length trailer was released for Mission Impossible today...that opens in 14 months! We now know more and have seen more about a movie that opens in 14 months than we do about a show premiering in just over 3 months. So crazy to think that this is on in just a few months and we still have no idea bout actual plot specifics or even much about characters. We've had images, brief flashes...but nothing like the Mission Impossible trailer today that was pretty illuminating about the plot and what to expect.

Accepting Marketing Departments timelines for selecting optimum trailer release dates, I think there is far more dissection out there than you suggest. The genuine question marks raised by the teaser are numerous, dark skinned elves, non-bearded dwarves, war mongering Galadriel, short haired elves, hobbits, bizarre arrivals by comet, compressed timelines, elves in Numenor……. That’s quite a list. I consider myself a genuine fan who has read Tolkien since I was a teenager many moons ago and while I loved Jackson’s films (albeit with some disagreements on certain aspects and a few really cringeworthy moments), I fear for what a couple of guys with little obvious evidence of their screenwriting skills, might do with it. My point is more about reassuring fans than anything else. Leaving it stew as it has I believe will only lead to more entrenched positions being taken. It may only be a moderate cohort of online dissent but that clamor can only get louder in an information vacuum. You would think Amazon would see this and respond instead of dividing the community further as they have by holding carefully managed events to small numbers of positively disposed individuals to try and present a positive viewpoint on the show. I’m open to the prospect of it being better than I expected but I really remain very pessimistic without a clearer idea of how this will be managed and that it won’t end up being primarily a political platform for diversity, gender equality, made up characters/storylines and unbelievable scenarios. I don’t want to be lumped in with those who are trashing this before seeing it but the evidence from the teaser and the clear fact that the showrunners actually seem to have little or no access to material (which is bizarre in itself. Why would Tolkien family only grant a highly restricted amount of material which makes presenting Tolkiens mythos all the more difficult? Could it just be about money?). Anyway that’s my tuppence worth!

Potential benefits of an SDCC release

I imagine Amazon has some sort of data-driven or data-informed method for determining their marketing timeline. You are most likely right about that. But I’m going to go out on a limb and predict SDCC as the premiere date for the trailer anyway, because I think that they will be able to maintain the hype all the way up until September 2nd if they release it at the end of July. Should they release it in the middle of June the buzz will be massive for a week or two, only to fade away completely in July. Marketing activities will eventually start again in the beginning of August, but “from scratch”. An SDCC release will enable Amazon to ride on the hype wave that the trailer created and maintain a steady flow of promotion (magazine features and covers, interviews, Q&As, social media posts, commercials, billboards, etc) right up until the show’s premiere without the buzz ever fading or people losing interest. Also, if done right they should be able to create tension a couple of weeks before the trailer is released by announcing the date on social media, releasing sneak peeks and such.
Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

It may only be a moderate cohort of online dissent but that clamor can only get louder in an information vacuum. You would think Amazon would see this and respond instead of dividing the community further There have been people upset about the prospect of ROP "being primarily a political platform for diversity [and] gender equality" since the show was first rumored, before we even knew for sure if it would happen, much less that they would cast actors of color, nor anything else. I don't claim to know why Amazon has maintained such an absurd level of secrecy over this project—it doesn't really make sense to me either—but they've held to this strategy for years. So, no, I would not expect them to switch tactics this late in the game just because reactions to the trailer followed the same divisions in the fandom that have been observable all along. And again, most of the people who watch ROP won't even know about the clamor of online dissent. The majority who do hear about it will only know if it's the subject of thinkpieces in mainstream publications, but they won't be active participants.

You make an intriguing case. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out and how many different facets there are to the campaign once it reaches a fever pitch. I imagine the soundtrack albums and companion books and all the other sorts of ancillary products we saw with the PJ films are somewhere in the pipeline.

...be due to the differences in movie and TV marketing, but on the other hand, Amazon staked out the September 2 premiere date more than a year in advance, which is a practice more commonly associated with movies. And yeah, the secrecy over the project would seem to do the opposite of building interest. Most of the non-online people I've mentioned the show to were barely aware of it, if at all. But maybe not getting it is why I'm not a highly-paid marketing consultant.

"There have been people upset about the prospect of ROP "being primarily a political platform for diversity [and] gender equality" since the show was first rumored..." This statement is 100% true and it makes me roll my eyes every time I think about it.
"So which story do you prefer?" "The one with the tiger. That's the better story." "Thank you. And so it goes with God."

The feeling is likely mutual. Neither is necessarily right except in retrospect. Rolling eyes is just righteous point of view. An unbalanced point of view in my opinion. Neither has the information to make an informed judgement.

So with all the controversy about ROP why don’t Amazon try easing the tension slightly by... Why ease tension when controversy does so much marketing for you? The best press to get rid of an annoyance is no press at all. I'm contributing to the success of RoP with every post I make. Ironic, eh?

Since it's slated for Hall H at San Diego Comic Con, it will drop the next day after that program. Usually the big reveals in Hall H are Saturday. So...after Saturday July 23 is my guess. Could be Sunday or Monday following. (They do this to counter any pirates...though in Hall H, there are lawyers roaming the room and if they spot a cell phone or camera--you're OUT and badges forever revoked.) Not worth the risk.
