India paper editions?

Here's a question for our experts in different editions of Tolkien's books (I think I should be right in naming geordie, for instance ) Is there any edition of LOTR printed on india paper currently available in bookstores? I know there were some in the past, one in the seventies, another in 1997, and maybe a few more, but those are obviously out of print. I checked Harper Collins's site, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks for your help!

distracted me from my seminar reading. I just had to go and see what my edition was. If India paper is that light, rather smooth stuff, then I have the 1991/1996 UK edition with it. This one; http://www.amazon.co.uk/...rdback/dp/0261102303

- it's a pity, because the India paper LotR is such an elegant book. I have a copy of each of the editions, inc. a 1st ed, dated 1969. It has all the text of the three volumes, plus the appendices and index, plus two maps; all in a book around one inch thick. I read up on India paper - strictlly speaking it's called Oxford India paper, as it was developed by the Oxford University Press in the latter half of the 19th century. It allowed the OUP to have a monopoly on publishing bibles and prayer- books up till around 1914. It's very strong; a strip 3 inches wide could hold a hundredweight (112 pounds). It's said that a 1500 page book could be held aloft by a single page; though I never tried it. Tolkien called the India paper LotR 'the Bible edition'. He was pleased to see his story bound in one hardback volume; with the ring-verse printed in red. I suggest you try abe books - there are some later reprints going for less than £100.00

Thank you very much for the information, I'll see if I can get my hands on one of those later reprints, maybe one of the '97 edition. I love my humble 1995 one volume paperback edition, but it's a bit bulky to carry around in my Indy bag, and one of these "Bible editions" seem to be perfect for that. Thanks again!!!

- here's a link to a seller on abe books who has a picture and description of the three de luxe Allen and Unwin books - LotR + TH + Poems and Stories. All three are lovely; there was only the one printing of Poems and Stories, but it's one of my favourite Tolkien editions. In spite of what some bookdealers might tell you, only LotR is on India paper. But all three are definitely worth getting. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5033540411&searchurl=bi%3D0%26bx%3Doff%26ds%3D30%26kn%3Dindia%2Bpaper%26recentlyadded%3Dall%26sortby%3D17%26sts%3Dt%26tn%3Dlord%2Bof%2Bthe%2Brings%26x%3D27%26y%3D5
