Yup, they cloned the CGI orcs in DOS...

My fears about the CGI orcs in DOS being shameless clones of each other turn out to be grounded in fact. Let's play a little game to prove that I'm right.... Look at this orc: http://i62.tinypic.com/sf846q.jpg Notice his slicked-back and spiked hair, forehead balding, protruding bottom jaw, and his general old-geezer look. Now watch this clip in 1080p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM7byUTrSZA and see how many times you can spot this SAME orc over and over throughout the barrel scene. Just watch after Bolg says "kill the she elf" and the group of orcs runs past the screen, you can see 3 clones in the midst of the rabble, and then Legolas comes charging out and shoots another clone who is holding a bow while standing on the orc gate. I swear, I knew I wasn't seeing things, they literally took the same 3 CGI orc models and cloned them 50 times over to create a false façade of "variety". Granted, they did create a decent amount of unique orcs, but the mere fact that there are TONS of CGI clones mixed in the group really makes things seem....ick. In AUJ almost every orc was unique....just more real. Its tolerable when you are viewing a HUGE CGI army, but when we are talking about a group of say 40 orcs, there are no excuses....Is WETA really THAT lazy?

Lazy!??! Did you not see the part where WETA realistically portrayed an elf riding two Dwarves in barrels on river rapids shooting orcs while doing pirouettes?

Weta work tirelessly, but there simply isn't enough time and money to make everything perfect. You have to do your best, but they pretty much are working 24/7 to make these movies. It's easy to make diagrams and circle clips with red lines, but it's honestly a miracle that these kinds of movies are even made.
"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair; and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."-J.R.R. Tolkien "Thanks for the money!" -George Lucas

I think that is WELL below the belt! If you have seen all the extended edition appendices for all 5 films thus far, to accuse WETA of being lazy is a real cheap shot and unfair. I'm not quite sure what people expect of such epic, vast films, I'm really not. What WETA do is frankly remarkable, and a few of us, anally looking in slow mo and close-up of every little detail on multiple viewings. I think you do them a great disservice.

I'm adding this to the growing list of things I never would have noticed if someone hadn't pointed it out.

It's up there with Thrain's design change, Éomer's sword falling out of the scabbard, Legolas not wearing his contacts, Legolas aging with the actor despite the moving taking place earlier, Old Bilbo aging with the actor, Frodo aging with the actor, Saruman's band-aid, and a bunch of others. There are a few legitimate jarring uses of CGI that have the potential to pull you out of the film. The entrance to Mirkwood, the CG Dwarves and logs in the river scene, and some of the more outlandish video game moments in Goblin Town and involving Legolas are the worst that come to mind. But these are movies that require at least some CGI. The sets simply do not exist in the real world, and building them is incredibly expensive, time-consuming, and limiting for moments of inspiration while filming. The actions that take place often cannot work with real actors or extras, either, due to the danger involved or impracticality of shooting the scene. There is a reason why Tolkien's books were deemed impossible to adapt to live-action film before Peter Jackson tried it. With this much CG footage, perfection is an elusive goal. They could spend ten years making the film perfect, and then people would complain about how long they took and say they were "over-polished". Multi-million dollar movies with global releases cannot be Burger King, "Have It Your Way"-type films. I have my own list of things I'd like to change, especially removing Thranduil's stupid scar and replacing that whole moment with a flashback of Oropher dying in the Battle of the Last Alliance. But I know that scene won't make it into the film, and I still love and enjoy it for what it's worth. I hope everyone else can do the same.

I'm as much a 'ranter' as anyone when I feel passionately about a subject and I know we can all get carried away at times. On some issues though I do think as fans we (as a collective) can be too harsh and not actual realise how enormous the task and incredible the output of the whole team has been for all the Middle Earth films.
