You are not the only guardian to stand watch over middle earth

Well, here's an AUJ question to lighten up the mood! What does lord Elrond mean by this? "So this is your purpose, to enter the mountain? There are some who would not deem it wise. You are not the only guardian to stand watch over middle earth". I don't get who he is refering to here. Galadriel? Azog? Saruman? He says this to Gandalf as if Gandalf has forgotten that he is not the only maia or something. It might be that english is not my first language, but can anyone explain this to me?

he's the other Istari, maiar that were sent to watch over middle earth and counter Sauron's plans, and Saruman do not think it is wise to help Thorin to take back Erebor. It could be because he doesn't want the dragon to be awaken, or because he has plans of his own that changes in middle earth politics could compromise

When you first saw it Was there something LOST in Translation? Seems that it was a Perfect Introduction to the MOST Beautiful Creature in MiddleEarth... Only to have it spoiled by Saruman? So much can read into it Just by Gandalf's reactions to these two.... More Galadriel! ......Bombyzz Favorite other than Goldberry!

I thought that Elrond was talking about the White Council. As far as I remember this group was formed to watch over Middle-earth and to protect it, wasn't it?

Elrond was definitely referring to the other Wizards, and probably to the rest of the White Council (including himself).

Thanks, I think I understand now! So he was sort of saying to Gandalf "don't forget that we should decide this together" or "don't rush into something without knowing the opinion of others" ?

as stated by Gandalf in FOTR. Saruman can veto Gandalf's decision as he was going to do but Gandalf sent the dwarves on their way before he could.

It sounds condescending coming from Elrond. And while Gandalf is certainly second to Saruman among the Istari, it does not mean Gandalf has to report every task, every secret, every finding he comes across in his journeys. He is not subservient to Saruman, never mind Galadriel or Elrond.
"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." ~ Tolkien lets Faramir speak his own view on war and glory

... himself, Galadriel and Saruman, but in a very general term. Gandalf has chosen one very particular way of approaching his mission, which Elrond appreciates. But Elrond also knows that Gandalf might tend to be so caught up in his approach that the doings of his fellow WC members might not always fully be on his mind and part of his considerations.

and of course the Istari. But really only Sauruman as the Istari rep on the council as Radagast and the two blues don't seem to be invited. If the Blues were ever considered to be part of the White Council it was on a technicality. They had disappeared into the South or East long before the Council was formed (although there had been previous Councils of the Wiise before the Istari came to Middle-earth).

In one of Tolkien's later writings, he describes Allatar (maybe Pallando, not real sure) as wearing "sea blue", which is almost a turquoise. So the other would have probably worn something darker.
How many Tolkien fans does it take to change a light bulb? "Change? Oh my god, what do you mean change?! Never, never, never......"

Where Groo? And why do I have a sudden craving for a ton of cheese dip? I wasn't sure anyone would get my silly in-joke! SInce you asked, Mark Evanier reports that the Groo/Conan crossover is completed and is being scheduled as we speak. New Groo comics are in the works. For those who don't know, Groo is a bumbling, cartoonish barbarian swordsman created by Sergio Aragonés (Mad magazine) with the aid of Mark Evanier (DNAgents).
