That's a real shame. [In reply to] Can't Post

Unsure It's a beautiful piece of music though. An interesting thought, is that the landscape in that scenery is all real and no cgi.The music goes perfectly well with the scenery.Wink

Probably because the Carrock scene underwent a very late alteration [In reply to] Can't Post

And was filmed as a pick-up, because of the 3 film split decision, and the changes to the Azog storyline.

Maybe... [In reply to] Can't Post

... but I think the flight scene was always meant to be an "epic moment" with the respective music... I guess. Unless they planned on keeping it short when it was still two movies... maybe PJ wasn't happy with the music for the scene, yet, when they finalized the CD?!

i surely do not know [In reply to] Can't Post

but, like you, lament its absence on the soundtrack. i'm hoping things will be rectified when the complete recordings for thauj is released.

and -- must share -- i just got up from the most beautiful dream... i'm not sure at this point i remember all that happened in the dream (the eagles were definitely there, and i do remember one of them plucking up the prostrate form of thorin from the ground,, but i +distinctly+ remember that the beautiful eagle music was playing throughout... i was living in the music. a wonderful experience!

and, i believe i dreamt of it because of your post (it was one of the last things i read before i went to bed), so thank you so much. : )

cheers --

.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

PJ wanted to bring back the Eagles theme, probably after the Score was complete [In reply to] Can't Post

I remember reading that, don't know where. Howard Shore originally wanted this to be played during the eagle scene:

, but PJ wanted more of a connection to LOTR

Yup [In reply to] Can't Post

And now as I think of it, I think I've read it here by someone who read it somewhere else. So obviously it can be untrue, but it makes perfect sense.

It does make perfect sense! [In reply to] Can't Post

The original music intended by Shore for this scene (as heard in the Good Omen track) sounds much more optimistic and upbeat. When it was still two films, the flight to the carrock meant a breakthrough and triumph for the company in the middle of the drama and did not need to involve the fake death of Thorin. When they decided to go for that route to get more tension for the ending, they needed a more somber and elegiac composition. That's how we got the film track that resembles the music from the end of RotK when the eagles carry half dead Frodo over Mordor.

Try to listen to the Good Omen track while watching the scene muted, could have worked beautifully.

Both versions are indeed beautiful I have to say, but it's still a shame IMO they had make so many "last minute" changes to the dramatic structure by splitting the two films into three.

I'm with you Lindele [In reply to] Can't Post

There has been very little info released on the intentions of the director or the composer in regards to the score. I can't say I've read everything but I would want a direct citation to any comment that someone says has been made before I'd trust it as accurate.

Where would PJ have made this comment? Where has he been talking the movie or the score outside of the production videos?

I think it's the most beautiful song in the film! And I also was hoping for that revised Ringwraith song when Thorin is rushing Azog. Dang it.

I think your right there [In reply to] Can't Post

The original music would have been perfect for a more positive sequence. It features the start of "my Dear Frodo" I think, which I think sounds great, would love to see it crop up again somewhere in the next two instalments. It also features what I assume to be Smaug's theme at the end (sure it plays in the prologue as well).

Changing structure... [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree with those who've said that the change from 2 to 3 films likely had a lot to do with the altered music. Howard may have composed earlier pieces that didn't hit the emotional notes that were needed once the film's arc was altered. We're sure to get the final versions when the eventual Complete Recordings are released a couple years.

"All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds awake to find that it was vanity; But the dreamers of day are dangerous men. That they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it possible."

Same thought here... [In reply to] Can't Post

This wonderful piece of music struck me the first moment I've heard it in the movie theater. And I'd hoped I was going to find it on the official soundtrack album. I guess there is still hope to appear on a future 'Complete Recordings' edition of AUJ.

Perhaps the track will have a place in the Extended Edition [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been wondering if the Extended Edition will include a stop-over at the Eagles' Eyrie.
