What about Elrond? Can't Post

I've read everywhere that both Ian Mckellen and Andy Serkis are all but confirmed to return for The Hobbit, but I don't remember reading anything about Mr. Weaving coming back as Elrond, any news about that?

P.S.: I was watching Labyrinth the other day after many years and I thought "David Bowie could be a great Thranduil". I know he was rumoured to play Elrond ten years ago. What do you think? Is he a good option for Thranduil?

As far as I know [In reply to] Can't Post

there has been nothing about Hugo Weaving til now. But that's not so surprising - they only recently were beginning the scriptwriting, and PJ and PJ and GDT made it clear that they won't cast anyone before the script is finished and they know who is needed.
It might be possible that they talked to some of the actors already, but if that would be the case, I am sure no one is allowed to say anything at this point in time. It is simply too early. You will have to wait - sorry.

If it is a comfort - they said they would bring back all old actors if they get a part in the new movies, and rather write the parts out of the script than recast the roles. (Though there might be exceptions to the rule, as it looks they have to recast Bilbo)

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

Not all the original actors will have a place in F1.. [In reply to] Can't Post

but in F2, most of them - yes. It is a comfort that they'll bring back the original actors to reprise their respected roles but so far everything is quiet. Waiting can be long and sometimes I can't endure it. Hopefully, we will get news soon but not too soon.

I hope Hugo comes back [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he is a great actor and I thought his Elrond had so much elf- charisma.

I would like to see him reprise his role.

Also, don't forget the fatherly role he played as Elrond to Arwen. Those scenes between him and Liv made you feel for them. Elrond was not ready to give up his only daughter to Aragorn but though she loved her father dearly, Arwen knew her doom was appointed for she had already chosen her fate long before the beginnings of the War of the Ring.

I feel sure they'll get Hugo Weaving back one way or another [In reply to] Can't Post

They're making every effort to get the LotR actors to return wherever possible, and Elrond's role is a pretty important one even though it is rather small. They wouldn't give it to a new actor unless they had to. And Hugo's recognition level hasn't risen as much since LotR as, say, Viggo's has; so I doubt he'd turn down the offer.

I agree. [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, that's what I think too. I just thought it was a bit weird that both Mckellen and Serkis said they were coming back, but nobody asked Weaving. Thanks for your replies!

I liked Weaving in V for Vendetta... [In reply to] Can't Post

It's amazing how well an actor can perform if given good lines; unfortunately, in LotR, Weaving was rather whiny and t-h-i-n. I was rather taken aback at how Elrond was portrayed as reluctant and defeatist, when that was not the case at all in the book.

Here's hoping that if he does return, they give him better scripting and allow a stronger portrayal

JOHN WILKES: That will depend, my Lord, on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."

Why would Elrond grow weaker over time? [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree with you that Elrond in the films is whiny and weak. But if the new films make his character stronger and more sure, that will only accentuate the contrast with the existing trilogy. Remember, they take place - and will eventually be viewed - after these two new ones.

The new films are not really an opportunity to "correct" misjudgements in Jackson's interpretation of Tolkien, unless they take the time to show why any corrections become "untrue" at the point where Fellowship begins.

Well then... [In reply to] Can't Post

Perhaps they can have him jovial and relaxed in The Hobbit, but becoming more pathetic and worrisome in Hobbit II due to the unexpected dalliance of Aragorn and Arwen (oh, and the growing might of Sauron, maybe, if it's not too taxing for Jackson and Boyens to add multiple layers to their characterizations).

I hope Hugo Weaving will be back [In reply to] Can't Post

Although I did not really like him as Elrond. It was not how I imagined him... But for consistencies sake they should bring him back (if they decide to include Elrond in the films). It would be silly to cast someone else as Elrond.

As for Bowie... acting-qualities aside ,ten years ago I would have loved to see him as Elrond. And he would have made a good Thranduil too. But he is too old now I think... Pity...

Someone must be to blame [In reply to] Can't Post

for all the misjudgements of the White Council. That's glossed over in the book - somehow everyone is wise, yet bad decisions are made (typical committee, I suppose!) In LotR, it's made pretty clear that Elrond is the isolationist and defeatist, who needs a lot of pushing from Gandalf and Galadriel. I think something could be made of that in Film 2.

...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew,
and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth;
and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore
glimmered and was lost.

I have oft said Bowie would be great for Thranduil [In reply to] Can't Post

And I stand by that. He has the sort of facial structure that works. He can look younger than he is. A little of the old tape behind the ears trick and the long flowing wig will make him look totally the part, much more so than say, Sam Neil, who is younger but looks much more mundane and inadequate. Bowie certainly could ACT the part. He is very fae, even without really trying to be. I am not banking on it, but I would love to see it, and I know he would do a great service to the role

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
