The new (half-troll? ogre?) villain from the trailer

I guess many of you noted that there's a new villain in town, judging by the trailer. He seems to be rather important to the plot, considering that he's appearing no less than three times - around 1:36, 1:57 and 2:13 (unless I'm mistaken, of course). He is of unknown origin.
Here he's standing in front of the trolls. He's way smaller than them, but also rather big for an orc. His crude loincloth and club seems rather troll-like, though (like the pot-belly).
He share's some human and troll-like facial features, which has led me to believe that he in fact could be a half-troll (I don't really want to think about how he was conceived, though). His left arm appears to be disproportionately small, while the right ones seems normal.
I believe this is him once again, getting run over by Bard's cart in Dale. Could he be some kind of Gundabad commander, providing trolls and other monsters for Azog's army?
Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

CGI this, CGI that, that's all you hear and not just with Hobbit. People have become so jaded. Sometimes i wish we were still in the nineties where effects got appreciated.

i thought it was gollum for a split second when i first watched the trailer. My guess is yeah half troll half human. Gandalf tells Thranduil; "he's breeding trolls with goblin men".

Very many half-Orcs and half-Trolls, and Olog-Hai and wicked men in Tolkien whom we haven't seen in the films. This character isn't too far from how I imagined some horrid cross-bred creature of Sauron to appear.

a suggestion that he might be the new leader of the Misty Mountain goblins, out to revenge the Goblin King's death - maybe even an offspring of said GG?

For me, this shot shows the superiority of such CGI creatures over prosthetics.
"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. A photograph of a real creature? As real as a photo of a lion or a dog? No, it looks fake, not because trolls don´t exist but because it doesn´t look like a physical being caught on film.

Beorn says in DOS that 'there is an alliance between the orcs of Moria and the necromancer of Dol Guldur'. So... where the hell are the Moria orcs/goblins ? I would have thought this would have been a prime excuse to bring back the Goblins from FOTR

The one at Dale is another character. Firstly he does not look much like the other in the face. Secondly he appears to get killed by a cart, and I expect the close-up shot of the other one takes place at a later point in the film.

At first I thought he was a regular mountain troll, in the mold of William, Bert etc. Then I thought Misty Mountain Goblin, but now I'm leaning towards just some "Orc" Difficult to classify this one at the mo. Orc/Troll cross would make sense.

It would be a good way to go back to the source material since for the Goblins in the book the main reason for marching towards Erebor is the death of the Goblin King.

I don't think it's a CGI problem, I just think it looks rather catoonish. The big, child-like head, small arms and pot belly makes it looks like an exaggerated drawing than a real creature. The rest of the trailer is quite good, but this creature jarred for some reason. I suppose even the Goblin King would seem out of place in the trailer, because the whole world has become a bit darker and grittier since AUJ.

Some where I read someone throwing around the idea that it is an ogre... they are mentioned by bilbo in the hobbit. not at the battle but its the only mention of "ogres" in all of middle earth and it exists in the hobbit while bilbo is trying to guess one of gollums riddles. Wouldn't put that small mention past mr jackson adding one in... maybe we'll get were worms too...

... which would make sense, I think. In AUJ the presence of the three trolls so far south was seen as an early warning that things were going wrong, so to have one or more of their kind in the battle links them back into the story - it means they're not just three isolated trolls that are nothing like all the other trolls in the films.

It seems like a good idea to have the intelligent mountain trolls commanding the more animalistic cave trolls (and the catapult-bearing trolls look like giant cave trolls if you ask me) It's really hard to tell from the battle shot whether or not our mystery guy really is troll-sized though. I assume the catapult trolls are mega-giant trolls, but even so it's hard to tell. The most likely explanation is that he's just a big old orc. His looks are definitely within the orc spectrum.

Different from all the other odious, disgusting, savage orcs we are used to. It's a pleasant change tbh. This is The Hobbit after all and is meant to be slightly lighter (if I dare say that!) than LOTR. It's nice to have a slightly more friendly looking troll... like those in Trollshaws in fact!
