Tidbits from the commentary

So far in, I've learned that Galadriel was originally set to confront Sauron when she's talking to the Dungeonkeeper in the current film, and that the shot of her wiping out the Dungeonkeeper was taken from footage of her throwing orcs right and left as she moves up the staircase to confront Sauron. The Morgul blade was taken from him in a frisking sequence that may not have been shot.

But what he described above, it sounds much better to me than how they ended up with the video game like Nazgul appearing in front of Sauron and that whole confrontation. Which I didnt like, still.

It sounds interestingly and really cool, although I am not sure how it should fit to the whole DG sequence (I mean Elrond and Saruman vs Ringwraiths etc.) - so do you have any other comments? :o)

"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. PJ and PB described how that DG scene was originally envisioned, and why they decided it would NOT work. It makes sense why it would not work when you hear them explain it, as it would have been yet another battle with Elves and Orcs.

... of having the Wise fight among them. I simply don't buy a bigger DG battle couldn't have worked. I do get their argument but I am disappointed they didn't try to make it work.

There was more to it that just that. They never shot anything with Galadriel's army fighting orcs in Dol Guldur. They thought having another battle here would take away from the climactic battle at the end of the movie. After reviewing the Dol Guldur scenes they did shoot, they were not happy with how Sauron was introduced and did not think it was a strong enough entrance for him, nor the most effective use of Galadriel. Originally Galadriel confronted and talked to Sauron and told him she was talking Gandalf, 'I will destroy you if you try to stop me', et cetera. There was to be an army of orcs all around her. The wave/blast of her hand was to knock all the orcs aside, then she takes Gandalf and Sauron does nothing. Later Sauron and the Wraiths reappear and block her way, then Elrond and Saruman appear and the Wraith battle happens. They replaced Sauron with the dungeon keeper and dropped the idea of having orcs all around, focusing more on the rings in the scene and that one orc. Some of her dialogue was replaced and her hand wave/blast was changed to destroy the dungeon keeper, and Sauron's reveal was moved to the end of the scene.
