Thranduil and Legolas relationship Can't Post

In my opinion, PJ made a bad job developing the relationship beetwen Thranduil and his son, Legolas.

There's not a introduction scene where we can see the Elven king and Legolas. They meet to the first time just when Thranduil is talking to the orc.

I thought would have a scene on the EE like that, but NO!

How aaaaaaaaaaaaaare you all???

Poor job... [In reply to] Can't Post

at developing Thranduil and Legolas' relationship? I would say when compared to Thorin - a leading character second only to Bilbo - and his nephews (especially Fili) the relationship of Thranduil - a supporting character - and Legolas - who is not even in the book - is very well developed.

Really? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think they gave us a very interesting slant on it. Given that there is nothing whatever in Tolkien about it except that the pair were father and son they could have gone for a very simple set-up - close relationship, no problems, son follows father. They tried instead to sketch something more interesting, which echoes some aspects of other elf stories in Tolkien. It's not book but it's not implausible. But they couldn't allow much screen time to it - and as it is, it was too much for some people. I'd say it was well done in the circumstances.

It's hard to talk about a 'relationship' between them, I feel [In reply to] Can't Post

In fact, PJ made a very bad job of developing Thranduil, though he certainly looked the part and was played well. There are hints about him being attacked by dragons (what dragons, and where and why, exactly?), some white jewels he covets (what, exactly, are they and why are they not explained in the film?), and so on. I expected such things to be tied up in the last film at least, and was sorely disappointed that they were not, in favour of stupid CGI stunts and gross-outs.

Legolas, meanwhile, would have been better left in Mirkwood, or not appeared at all as far as I'm concerned, and his 'development' and 'presence' in the film was one of the things that was wrong with the DoS and the last film, IMHO.

Under the circumstances, it is hard to talk about any kind of meaningful 'relationship' between them at all – and they also didn't look or act like father and son, either. I'll say it once again, because it annoys me so much: Legolas just jarred with me and threw me right out of the films whenever he appeared (combination of zombie eyes, idiotic CGI stunts, inappropriate appearances and absurd, unnecessary references to LotR and wooden acting).

Not a good job, I am afraid. [In reply to] Can't Post

It never went beyond the prince between Tauriel and father set-up.

The mother subplot was just so clishéed and pointless - I could never bring myself to call that "deep" or "subtle". It is also introduced so amateurishly. The short information by Legolas, later the farewell between father and son. And in between hints at the necklace and Thranduil's relationship to "love".

But just because its only hints doesn't make it deep... but it imho sure makes for a convoluted, underdeveloped and unneeded subplot.

Imho it would have been better to not introduce the "Elves chasing Orcs" subplot and have Legolas act as a commander of his father's army, with Tauriel being the one acting to prevent a war between Dwarves and Elves once Erebor is sieged.

Ugh, I really do not want to come across so negatively in all my posts... but having rewatched some scenes of BotFA that I do love only recently, I somehow got more annoyed by those that prevent me from loving the whole trilogy the same way.

We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

One of those things PJ would be criticized for either spending too much time or not enough [In reply to] Can't Post

on this relationship. Yes, I would like another 60+ minutes of EE to smooth out some of the areas but we won't get it.

Not sure how I feel about it [In reply to] Can't Post

To me it isn't hugely important - but maybe because I've watched the Appendices I caught all the bits about the necklace & the mother's death - it was enough for me. There was a really awesome scene in the Appendices where the Dwarves are first brought before Thranduil - the scene was never finished because PJ decided it wasn't needed. If PJ had kept it, THAT would have been the first interaction between father & son. As much as I loved the films, I agree with those that think Legolas shouldn't have been pushed so far into the story. I have no problem with his being in Mirkwood - he WAS a Mirkwood Elf - but I think his part was too big, at the expense of other characters, like Thranduil. Probably should have been more of a cameo appearance, like Frodo (and I admit, I fast-forward through that scene most of the time).

I completely agree... [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw no love between them. Just two blood-thirsty warriors. =(Pirate
