I am not a fan of bringing Legolas back, but...

... I have to admit I can imagine why they would want to bring him back for a cameo in The Hobbit / Battle of the Five Armies. It would make a very cool arch for his character if the first we see him is when he is fighting Dwarves in the Battle, because we know he's going to end up fighting side by side with Gimli. I would like that... Other then that, I have no real desire to see him prancing around Mirkwood or Thrandui's Halls just because he is Legolas, and no other Elves have names in the book. Middle-earth is a big world, and there should be many different characters in it, not just the same ones all the time.

The Elves and Dwarves never actually fight. Gandalf interrupts them as Battle is about to be joined, then they band together to fight the Orcs and Wargs

Okay so maybe not actually fighting, but looking eager and ready to fight them. And you know, for movie pupses it might be nicer to see them actually fighting. On any account, the arch still stands!

... Gimli and Legolas looked eager and ready fo fight at the beginning of FOTR too, and look how it ended up. I reckon that a motiff of dwalves being initially reluctant towards Elves in TH and then gradually changing their attitude in F2 would be really cool. That would give them a number of extra sub-plots which they may be short of in the second movie, as it is not actually based on any main piece of writing, just on Appendixes and some others.

Although (as others here have said) Legolas is not mentioned in 'The Hobbit', it would still be plausable that he'd be around somewhere, either in battle or in Mirkwood. I just think it would be a cool little cameo, and a fun nod to the fans.

He could show up in the bridge film as well.

I'm sure one of the scenes they'll include would be Gollum escaping from Mirkwood - maybe we'll find out it was all Legolas' fault.

Gimli in the Battle of Five Armies...

Also adding to what the wonderful Peredhil said, while Gimli could of course be at the battle without it being too forced, my own argument for Legolas in the battle is simply that he is Thranduil's son... Prince of the.... wood elves. So his importance in both the court and the battle should be enough to justify any possible cameos. Gimli is a little furter removed from the situation, but it is not impossible for him to be there either. But I don't think anyone other than Legolas has a solid enough excuse to be back for a cameo in The Hobbit. Possibly Arwen if she is stopping by Rivendell coincidentally at the same time that Thorin's Company arrives. But probably best she doesn't. Still, she is quite lovely.

...David Bowie. To my knowledge he'd shown a keen interest to be involved in LotR, and the idea he would play Thranduil in a later Hobbit movie has been a fan favourite from the beginning. So until I hear otherwise from official sources I'm going to assume that remains the case. :)

I agree some of the folks here, that Legolas is not big deal if he appear once again in the hobbits movie, as for all we know bilbo was once captured by King thranduil , of course even slight scene of Legolas is present in there. Now the one I bothered most is when I read that they will add female elves in the character named Itaril . she's like a guard female elf in king elf kingdom.who fell inlove to a young elf lord...I was like ..what is her role and connected to the movie? is peter jackson gonna some add love story to put legolas more meaningful in the second movie? I don't want to see that..because they will ruin the bridges of the LOTR movies that no related..the fact prince Legolas in the movie LOTR doesn't show interest in any girls in the movie he's just like easy go lucky. what I want to see and for some clarification to on the second part of the movie hobbit which not clear to me on the movie LOTR is where is sauron came from, ?..how he became evil and the ring so powerful? why aragon live in rivendill? ...I hope the second stallment of the hobbit which is the 5 armies they will clear some of this points .
