Thoughts on Bard's role?

“Bard is a blank page in terms of what he could be in a movie like this because Tolkien doesn’t really describe him too much in depth in the book of ‘The Hobbit,’” Jackson said. “We wanted to give Bard a deeper role than that…. He’s the counterpoint to Thorin, really. “On one side of it you’ve got this dwarf descending into madness and on the other hand this human being who has to hold his people together and confront Thorin. He is the guy who has to try to manage what’s happening and carry all the humanity that Thorin has lost.” full article here Wondering where this leaves the interaction among the dwarves as Thorin goes downhill. Originally if I had to guess I would have thought Balin was shaping up to be the leading voice of reason, but maybe this means that's going to be more Bard's role? Perhaps there won't be much (or any?) dissent among the dwarves regarding Thorin's actions?

I think a lot of them will object.

For example, I think all the Dwarves in Laketown at the end of DOS will object. This will be especially bad for Thorin since Fili will fight him on it. Balin will also object, but not so loudly. He'll try to counsel Thorin into rethinking. But ultimately, their loyalty will prevail, and they'll all follow him–one last time.

but not much. I think it will mostly come from Balin, and maybe a bit from the nephews, but Dwarves are loyal and some of them will agree with Thorin completely. After all, Nori is a thief and Gloin is a businessman, they'll want the gold. And then there's Dwalin. Funny bit of art I found, but pretty accurate I think.
Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!

Fili, Kili and to some extent Bombur are mentioned as dissenting - all the others were on board. How closely the movie will stick to that remains to be seen. One thing I feel comfortable speculating is that whoever takes which side the dissent will almost definitely be made more of in BOTFA than in the book, where it was just mentioned in passing and does not seem to have caused a serious rift within the company. If more take the nephews' side, there's potential for some more dramatic tension - and reconciliation as they rush to eachother's sides when everything hits the fan - between the other related dwarves. We'll see.
