The Mithril Mail

I'm disappointed that this scene was not included in DOS. Also the part where the dwarves are amazed by the treasure while Thorin try to locate the Arkenstone. It would have been more interesting that the battle between Smaug and the company. Hopefully as the mithril mail is in LOTR we will see it in TABA.

In the book, they only get their armor and search for the Arkenstone after Smaug leaves for Laketown. For pacing reasons, I don't think they would have included that part in DOS anyway. If they hadn't put in the dwarf confrontation with Smaug, the only other options for that section of the movie would be the attack on Laketown/Smaug's death or the Battle of Dol Guldur. The scenes with the mithril and the Arkenstone would be too "quiet" for a movie climax and would have been saved for the next movie anyway. We should see that bit fairly early on in TABA.

Not sure how Thorin feels about Bilbo?

Does he still distrust Bilbo at the end of DoS? If so I don't see why he'd give Bilbo the mithril vest, unless he sees it as his share? I'd suggest another dwarf handing it over, but FotR states "Bilbo has a set of mithril rings that Thorin gave him" so how will this gift giving play out?

Thorin gives Bilbo the shirt after Smaug leaves for Laketown. "'Mr. Baggins!' he cried. 'Here is the first payment of your reward! Cast off your old coat and put on this!' "With that he put on Bilbo a small coat of mail, wrought for some young elf-prince long ago. It was of silver-steel, which the elves call mithril, and with it went a belt of pearls and crystals. A light helm of figured leather, strengthened beneath with hoops of steel, and studded about the brim with white gems, was set upon the hobbit's head.

At this point, their last-ditch big production to try to kill Smaug has utterly failed, and they expect he'll return and kill them all, too, so now's not the time to be doling out gifts. In fact, in the book it's days after barely surviving Smaug's attack before the dwarves emerge from hiding in the tunnel and notice that he hasn't returned.

Once they see Smaug fly off they will like armour up believing that he will return. It will be interesting to see how Bilbo acquires the mithril mail as Thorin is not happy with him at the moment.

They've likely moved this to the third movie.

The dwarves really can't search through the treasure to find the Mithril Mail until Smaug is gone. Also, although Thorin was getting a little crazy with Bilbo about the Arkenstone, he's now been distracted with fighting the dragon and may calm down a bit. Also, as I recall from the book, Bilbo basically lies and says he didn't find the Arkenstone, so he'll likely do this in the movie and Thorin will find the Mithril Mail as he and the other dwarves search the treasure and someone will give it to Bilbo. Speaking of the Mithril Mail, I really hope that when Bilbo sneaks out of the mountain to give the Arkenstone to Thranduil that they keep Thranduil's backhanded compliment in the dialogue: "Bilbo Baggins! You are more worthy to wear the armour of elf-princes than many that have looked more comely in it." That always makes me Lol!

... I don't remember where it came up, but you could clearly see the neck of the Mithril shirt under his costume. Someone else may know where to find it!

Also, I think I recall Bilbo at one point when he first is looking at some of the things in the pile of gold etc, before he sees Smaug, that he picks up a little piece of something that looks like mithril mail. Maybe I am not remembering it right, but that's the impression I got when I first say the film. I guess I'll have to look at that moment again in my next viewing.

He does pick up something but it looks more like a necklace or piece of jewelry. It could be mithril. It's too small though to be the shirt.

I'm guessing Thorin will give him the mithril mail

I think in TABA Bilbo will lie about finding the Arkenstone and Thorin will guilt himself into believing it, because he will remember that Bilbo saved his life and also got them out of the dungeons. I think this is the reason for him saying in the dungeons that they still had another hope (words to that effect), it's trying to show how much Thorin trusts and solidly believes in Bilbo's loyalty and abilities at that point. So Thorin will give him the mithril mail, and will probably say something extremely appreciative and moving when he does so, maybe even saying something reminiscent of the 'loyalty, honor...' line from AUJ which at that time he only extended to his own kin, but now indicating he holds Bilbo in the same regard. And so then Bilbo in turn is going to be very guilt-ridden and conflicted about accepting it, because he knows now how much Thorin really trusts him, and now he's keeping the Arkenstone from him. In the book it seemed to me that Thorin was primarily angry at Bilbo's actions. But in the film, I think based on how they're portraying Thorin in DOS, the fact that he trusts Bilbo so much, that instead it'll be more of an extremely wounded betrayal by Bilbo's actions. And I wonder if we're going to get the 'you descendant of rats' line, and if so, whether Martin Freeman is going to play his reaction to that seriously or comically. I guess you never know with MF.
