The ultimate Tolkien-PJ dream!!!
|
Can't Post

Now, in a perfect world I would love to participate in a PJ Middle-earth Film Festival, where one spends 6 days watching the Middle-earth films (with re-viewing on each day of the writers' commentaries -- making it about 6-8 hrs of viewing per), and interspersed with another 12 days watching the Appendices (which are about 5 hrs ea.), with ripsnortin discussions thereof!!!!... However such is only possible in a college campus setting with a captive audience, so to speak. Oh, and let's go for broke: One also gets un-abridged readings of TH and LotR!! (I still dream of a recorded LotR with the PJ cast doing their respective parts! and narrated by a Christopher Plummer, say...) Or one would need a T-PJ version of Wagner's Bayreuth, where once a year for 2 weeks you attend at least 6 hrs (incl intermissions!) a day of performances of 7 of his works (usually incl his 4 part Ring Cycle)... in a specially constructed, specially dedicated environment with lectures on same... far from the madding crowd! TORn comes close to this with the coordinated viewings of the films with discussions on the Net... But I think it really works best with everyone actually assembled in one room....

Could I add John Howe and Alan Lee talking about their book illustrations and film designs (with slides). And some talks and demonstrations by Richard Taylor and his merry men (and women). And a screen somewhere showing old documentary footage and recorded interviews with Tolkien himself... Wouldn't that be something?

... that is called "life".... ;-) But, seriously, I like the idea of perhaps including the creative graphic work behind the films... The WetaWorkshop, WetaDigital progress, and let's not leave out Howard Shore. Sort of a vast exhibition of a PJ Middle-earth Museum... where material covered in the 6 "Hobbit Chronicles" books (or we hope: the future "LotR Chronicles" books!!) and Doug Adams' "Music of the LotR Films" book (or the future one -- we hope -- of "Music of the Hobbit Films")... Those would be for "off-moments" during the Festival. One of the most exciting bits in the Bo5A Appendices was to see there are store rooms of the "stuff" from the films still being kept. Again, the Wagner museums in Europe set the precedent.

I would go to that in a heartbeat. Smart idea. Wish one day that would happen.

It's called Hobbitcon Sorry, it was a joke that I couldn't resist Seriously, though- that would be awesome! But you do have some very real logistical challenges with your idea- namely how to get everyone you wish to be involved from the production away from their busy lives and careers long enough to participate in such an event. These outstanding actors/artists/directors/writers have a life outside of TH, and many are working on other projects as well. Being an actor of a successful film often lends itself to working on OTHER films/tv shows. And with an actor, their life isn't like most regular folks. They don't have jobs with salaries and a consistent income (even if they make a couple million on a movie). It's a "paid if you work, broke if you don't" type employment. Same with directors, writers, even artists for films. It's a "per diem" system, not a "salaried" system. Therefore, one must ask two questions: 1. How are you going to pay these guys/girls to do this? and 2. How are you going to convince them to abandon paying jobs in order to attend this? Especially as an actor never knows when work may up and cease for whatever reason? Not all actors continue to be household names for the rest of their lives like Sir Christopher Lee. Some actors have their glory days, then fade out. Therefore, they have to utilize the money they earn during their glory days as best they can. You never know when you may be in a car accident like Mark Hamill and have your face disfigured, or fall off a balcony and break your back (Orlando Bloom is VERY lucky he isn't in a wheelchair), or end up with cancer and be unable to do your job anymore because the surgeries disfigured you and the treatments left you weak and emaciated, etc. Or what if you get hurt on set, and aren't able to continue working ever again? Heck, even Christopher Reeves (original Superman or Batman- can't remember which) fell off a horse and broke his back and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, not "saving the world until the next episode". While I would absolutely ADORE such an event (and am sorry to be a realist)- I would rather forego such an event and get together with some tornsibs and put something similar on with a week or two of movie analysis and appendices discussion and a great time than pull these wonderful men and women away from jobs that undoubtedly both further their careers and exposure and pay FAR more than we ever could. Could we extend the invite? Sure. But I doubt everyone on your list will be able to make it for reasons listed above (plus, they also have lives outside of work- perhaps Jimmy Nesbitt's daughter has a school play, or his eldest made the varsity sports team, or one of their significant others/spouses are going to have a baby or something? You can't expect them to put their lives on hold for events like this, especially ones that may not be able to compensate them for time and travel-airline tickets, even coach, alone are expensive depending on where you're going- it would cost me nearly $2,000 USD to fly to NZ just in coach airfare). In an ideal, Tolkien-infused utopia, this would be a dream come true (after actually walking across NZ dressed as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, of course ). But realistically, I'm not sure it could ever happen outside of a formal convention where those who come are compensated accordingly. Think of it this way- would you be willing to travel halfway around the world, stay in a hotel, and attend work related events all day for hours on end with people who (fans) may not leave you alone or give you a moment's peace (for a project you've moved on about), leave your family for two weeks, endure jet lag, pay for all those meals (and have people ogle you while you're eating), and sacrifice at least two weeks' worth of pay or potentially lose your current paying job and not knowing when your next paying job will come- paid for completely out of your own pocket? Let's be fair, if something ever ends up organized like this- we really need to pay these lovely men and women for enduring us obsessed fans for two weeks Now, if all of those involved are totally cool with it- then I would DEFINITELY COME!!!! But I wouldn't raise your hopes on every single person showing up if I were you- life doesn't work that way sometimes

It was Dormouse who suggested something about stars or production people attending... All I said was, the films and appendices would be shown in a marathon format. If PJ and other NZers set up a travelling museum that would be nice. But that is not core. The real problem is getting a venue and enough people to attend and for such a long (16 day) event. This is a dream, not a proposal. Let's not lose our Hobbit sense! ;-)
