I have not yet given up hope on seeing the talking purse in the movies. Sometimes, PJ does change the position of events in the books, eg not having Wrags in Fotr but a big Wrag scene in TTT. So, maybe the talking purse will be in a different place. In the Elvenkings palace maybe? Possibly Beorn will have one. Or in Erebor itself in Smaugs hoard were it will have a nice chat with Bilbo! You never know, their may be dozens of them in Smaugs hoard!

sorry for my enthusiasm , but I have read the hobbit several times but in Spanish and I have heard this talking purse in this forums soooo many times, that finally I can take no more, would you anyone gently explain me what is it?

... is in the book in the scene with the trolls. bilbo tries to steal it, and the purse itself pipes up and warns the trolls of bilbo's presence.

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."
this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

There was a purse in it, as big as a bag to Bilbo. "Ha!" thought he warming to his new work as he lifted it carefully out, "this is a beginning!"
It was! Trolls' purses are the mischief, and this was no exception."'Ere, 'oo are you?" it squeaked, as it left the pocket; and William turned round at once and grabbed Bilbo by the neck, before he could duck behind the tree.
"Blimey, Bert, look what I've copped!" said William.
A most pivotal scene in the entire story. I wouldn't want it at Erebor. It's either in the Troll scene, or not at all.

I admit, I was a little disappointed that they didn't have Bilbo try to pick Bill Huggins' (?) pocket.

I wouldn't have minded the talking purse despite what others have said in the past. But it has to be with the trolls or not at all. It just wouldn't be right if it were in a different place.

I read LOTR before The Hobbit, and the talking purse was one of those silly fairy-tale elements in The Hobbit that made me roll my eyes (others being the singing of the Rivendell elves and the "attercop" business in Mirkwood). I'm glad they left it out for the film, but some of the changes to "Roast Mutton" were a little unbelievable, like the dwarves allowing themselves to be tied up.

Is a classic story move, the heros letting themselves in the grasp of the villian on behalf of the one in trouble thus allowing Bilbo to feel worse, but giving him an opportunity to redeem himself.
It worked fine for me.

That part in the book makes me laugh every time! I was so hoping to see it with the trolls, but just to hear it speak would make my year.
