The six hankie ending Can't Post

Here's a take on BOTFA's ending(s), in order of hankies ("tissues" Wink). I think the main characters' arcs will be resolved and will be used as opportunities to set up for LOTR, and they are all going to be very emotional:

Hankie #1. Thorin/Kili/Fili deaths & funeral Unsure, of course. Complete with Thranduil returning Orcrist to Thorin.

Hankie #2. Thranduil names Bilbo Elf-friend. Has a change of heart about helping Middle-earth, to set up how/why Legolas ends up at the Council and part of the Fellowship in LOTR.

Hankie #3. When Dain becomes leader of the Dwarves at Erebor, this is used as an opportunity for Balin to reveal to Bilbo (and us), when they say good-bye to each other, that he intends to go to Moria by saying sadly that Thorin was the only one he 'would have followed', that after all that has happened he does not want to remain in Erebor now, and that some of the other Dwarves are going to go with him. Given KS' and MF' abilities, and what we know of Moria, this could be a complete tear-jerker of a conversation that will leave us all in sobbing puddles.

Hankie #4. Maybe Tauriel will have some type of vision or endure a wound or injury, that, along with Kili's death, will make her decide to leave for the ships, to use this as an opportunity to set up and explain what was a big question for non-readers in the original trilogy, namely, 'what are these ships and where is everybody going on them'? And I really, really want an emotional goodbye scene between her and Legolas . I want to see some emotional depth between these two close friends at their parting.

Hankie #5. Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman discuss plans for the continued vigilance and protection of the people of Middle-earth. Radagast tells them that his mission is the same, but his is to be vigilant and protect the creatures of Middle-earth, and he goes off on his own to do that Angelic. I really like Radagast and I'm packing an extra hankie for this scene.

Hankie #6. I sure don't know the very last scene, lol Sly, but my guess is that Young Bilbo will return home to Bag End and wander back outside and sit down on the bench and smoke a pipe and the scene will turn back into Old Bilbo sitting there, smoking a pipe and remembering. I just have a feeling it will end somewhat the way it began in AUJ, with something added in, maybe a voiceover, that ties into his having made a decision to leave the Shire and go to Rivendell, which is where his story picks up in FOTR, on the very same day.

I left Bard off the hankie list, because it seems his resolution will be a generally happy one, but it would be nice if it added something or advanced the plot too. Any thoughts on a Bard resolution that could also wrap up a plot point or further the story?

Just speculatin' Wink! What do you guys think Laugh?

And I'm probably going to need to buy two tickets for the movie - one for me and one for my box of tissues Laugh.

Balin [In reply to] Can't Post

I think in the book Gandalf and Balin stop by for a visit at the very end, and I would like to see that in the movie as well. It could always be shortly after Bilbo's return, and Balin could (probably should) say something about going to Moria. I do agree, though that such a statement about Balin (and Ori and OIn) going to Moria would be a hankie moment, knowing what happens to them.Unsure

Why yes, I DO look like Anna Friel!
