The favorite child? (Musing on Fili and Kili)

I know we all noticed more Kili than Fili moments and Kili, I think, had more interactions with Thorin. I am, however, sure that it is "Fili" Thorin yells during the stone giants scene because he thought Fili had been crushed. Anyway, I though of a psychological reason for it. Kili is more of a "problem child: than Fili, more inclined to get into trouble. Problem children do tend to get more attention. Of course,it could just be they like showing Adian Turner's gorgeous face.

Why would Thorin have a favourite child?

They're his nephews.
I never really thought he would have a favourite. If he does, I hope it's Fili. Kili isn't a proper Dwarf.

where they explain a lot of the development of the characters, it says that Fili is the more responsible of the two and feels the weight of his royal blood more than Kili who is more irrepressible and carefree. I don't think Kili is actually a "problem child" so much as more uninhibited and likely to jump into things without thinking them completely thru.

Kili is also the youngest, and Thorin probably feels responsible for keeping him safe ("what would I tell your mother if something happened to you?"). Kili to me resembles Thorin, especially with the hair/beard coloring. Maybe he reminds Thorin of himself when he was younger? I have a cousin who was definitely a "wild child". If anything happened my aunt would always yell his name--even if he wasn't the one responsible!
" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!" "Most astonishing wonderful!"

Thorin clearly has a soft spot for Kili.

And I think that soft spot is most clear with that warm fuzzy smile Thorin gives Kili (who's just off camera) when Thorin enters Bag End. Best Smile Ever. In the Stone Giants sequence, I'm pretty sure Fili's with the group that crashes and Kili's with Thorin's group, but I like to imagine Kili ends up with the group that crashes because Thorin's reaction makes more sense that way. Thorin does yell "Nooo! Kili!" according to foreign-language subtitles, and when he rounds the corner and sees that the crashed group is safe, he moans approximately "Oh, Kili, oh..." in relief. I also think it's interesting that Kili is the only Dwarf whom Thorin commands when they're under attack. Could this be because Thorin himself has spent time training Kili in warfare, and so continuing the instruction when they're in "real-life" situations is only natural? Or does Thorin just think Kili needs more looking after than anyone else in the Company? Of course this just begs the question you asked: why only Kili and not Fili too? I wondered if Kili does remind Thorin of himself when he was younger. Kili certainly resembles him, in looks at least if not in temper.

I'm sure he loves both of them equally really, but after what I have heard in character descriptions and interviews it is that Fili is older and more mature. Kili is younger and needs to be kept in place sometimes (hench how he'd run to Bilbo when the trolls caught him again if Thorin hadn't stopped him). Also I think it was said somewhere that although Thorin keeps an eye on Kili too, so is Fili. He's being protective, but also is aware that Kili's good. He's also the archer in the group and he's always on his tail so.

The Stone Giant's scene is confusing...

Every time I've watched the movie here's what I've seen: When Bofur is admiring the Stone Giants and Thorin yells at him, someone pulls him back. Can't say for sure, but it looks like Kili. Also, it looks like Thorin's at the head of the line - he always is. But then when they separate Fili says to Kili, "Grab my hand!" And Fili's on the left, Kili's on the right, and Bofur's behind Fili. To me it always looked like Fili is the one Thorin should be calling for, not Kili. I'm pretty sure that in one shot Kili was at the back of Thorin's group. I wonder if they shot this scene more than once. It looks like someone switched places between takes.

I noticed that too. It was Kili pulling Bofur into the mountain side, but arrgg. Like you I am very confused with the scene too because later they are far apart from one another too. I don't see why one of them would change places like that on such a narrow road. Then of course Thorin yelling Kili. Most poeple seem to hear him yell that. The subtitles here also said Kili ^__-

Fili is a bit more mature and seems to be of a more quiet nature. If they were both young dogs on my mushing team, Kili would be necklined in next to an old geezer... Fili could be put in lead... (love'em both!) I think this sums it up... http://swordwhale.tumblr.com/post/40502063794/ilovehobbits-click-to-watch-the-hobbit-omg

I've always thought this was because they had already shot some scenes before the Fili cast-change happened and they were unwilling to reshoot the majority of them, so a lot of Fili's lines had to be left out (?)

Fili does look after Kili as well. You see it especially in the Warg fight at the hidden pass. Thorin yells at Kili to shoot them, and Kili shoots until Thorin tells him to run (apparently having missed the earlier "in all of you" comment). You notice that Fili is next to his brother and DOES NOT LEAVE HIM until Thorin tells him to run. And Fili waits until Kili has reached the pass before he jumps in, then he jumps in with Kili immediately behind him, then Thorin jumps in immediately behind Kili. There is also that scene where they are on the stone giant's knees as they start splitting up. It is Fili that says "Kili grab my hand" but Kili can't get it in time. The look on Fili's face is extremely worried and terrified, but the look on Kili's face is lost and terrified and devastated. He has no idea what to do without his brother with him. Fili is clearly more worried about Kili here than he is about his own safety. If he had been worried about his own safety he would have likely been looking down and backing further away from the rift as they were pulled apart instead of reaching for Kili until the last possible second, and even after they were clearly out of reach of each other Fili doesn't take his eyes off Kili and move back until a few seconds later. The concern and closeness and caring of the brothers for each other is what made them my favorite characters in the book, and they are definitely my favorite characters in the movie as well. Plus I love to see how they bounce off each other even without looking at each other. You can tell they aren't twins (Fili is more level headed and mature, plus they don't look alike and Fili acts the big brother) but you can definitely tell that they have been inseparable since the day Kili was born. I love seeing that closeness among siblings
