The Hobbit so far...

A musing and fan video. I wanted to gather a moment before the coming storm of The Battle of the Five Armies and reflect on the Hobbit so far...what have you gained from these films how have you felt about them and what do you think their personal legacy will be for you? I have also made this post to promote a little video I am in the process of making and want some feedback on that I will continue to shape in the wake of the release of BOFA in order to shape the whole story. I intended this video to reflect the beauty of Middle-earth, something that I feel in spite of all I feel the Hobbit films have disappointed me in they have let me enter that beaitiful world of Middle-earth again. I also intended this to be Bilbo centric. The last part is not really finished and intended to connect to BOFA once we get it but I'd like some feedback on this montage I spent a while assembling! Cheers everyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKns1ztoJy8

I can't relate to your disappointment in The Hobbit but I share your pleasure in the visual beauty and enchantment of the world into which they take us - and I really enjoyed watching what was for me an unpredictable sequence and hearing some much-loved words and music. thanks for posting it

I don't share any disappointment in the films. If I have any it for me is I have to becareful a bit to say I like them. Always feel a bit like there is someone waiting to tell me how stupid I am for liking them. I do think there is tons of beauty in the films. They're pretty darn good.

So much so that it is hard to reconcile the loving care that you obviously put into preparing this video with the disappointment that you express in these films. But I thank you nonetheless for sharing it; I enjoyed watching it quite a bit.

I think I possibly came off as a bit too harsh in regards to my opinion on the films

I want to say I still really enjoy them and have seen both countless times ( upwards of 100 easily at least for AUJ which is my preferred film of the two). I also think BOFA will be the best of the bunch and if the tone carried from that first trailer makes its way into the film and everything falls into place the way it is seeming to I will be one happy camper. I just feel that from these first two films, the result we can now see in plain sight, they could have been SOO much more; so I assume I have both the love from the things I do really enjoy and the crushing disappointment in my heart from what I wanted to be done differently or better in my opinion at the same time. I guess I would say I still really like the films, but what I was really wanting was "Lord of the Rings trilogy" greatness, which I feel I didn't get. I'm still so grateful that we have the films at all though, which makes it still hard for me to render a definitive opinion on the films because they were my most anticipated of all time and for that reason my expectations were at a place that was just sky high and I wanted to love them so much but instead I guess part of me loves them and the other part is disappointed and has a lot of "what ifs." However, they have definitely impacted me and governed a lot of my life these past years and I think will continue to do so.

I enjoy them quite a lot overall. There are things I do not like in each movie so far and they are not perfect films, but for what they are I could not complain to much.

This describes my own feelings towards the Hobbit films perfectly, especially the part of what could have been achieved with a little more refinement and restraint! I do still love many parts of these films but just cannot embrace them wholeheartedly. (And thank you for your video, too, of course, which I'm very curious to see, but just can't, as I'm depending on mobile devices for the moment.)

I love The Hobbit films dearly. They've cast a lot of warmth over us as an audience. I think they're a vast improvement over the Lord of the Rings films.

I'm amazed, truly amazed to hear such an opinion expressed. Certainly, the acting for the main characters in AUJ (e.g. Thorin, Bilbo, Balin) is in general of a higher standard than that in LotR. However, the script writing, editing and pacing of DOS is truly dreadful. It leaves me cold, after a very good start in AUJ. LotR was a unique phenomenon in film history; DOS is much more of a forced, by-the-numbers exercise attempting to gain viewers among the teens and twenties. (IMHO.)
I love The Hobbit films dearly. They've cast a lot of warmth over us as an audience. I think they're a vast improvement over the Lord of the Rings films.

There's lots of people on the internet who are sooooo smart they just can't enjoy anything! I'm so glad I'm stupid enough to enjoy The Hobbit movies! Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, And drinking largely sobers us again. Fired at first sight with what the Muse imparts, In fearless youth we tempt the heights of Arts; While from the bounded level of our mind Short views we take, nor see the lengths behind, But, more advanced, behold with strange surprise New distant scenes of endless science rise! So pleased at first the towering Alps we try, Mount o’er the vales, and seem to tread the sky; The eternal snows appear already past, And the first clouds and mountains seem the last; But those attained, we tremble to survey The growing labours of the lengthened way; The increasing prospect tires our wandering eyes, Hill peep o’er hills, and Alps on Alps arise! -Alexander Pope, "An Essay on Criticism", 1709 Dur yup!

Yet she was doomed to wait upon an old man, whom she loved as a father, and watch him falling into a mean dishonoured dotage; and her part seemed to her more ignoble than that of the staff he leaned on. “Think you that Wormtongue had poison only for Théoden's ears? ‘Dotard! What is the house of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll on the floor among their dogs?’ Have you not heard those words before? Saruman spoke them, the teacher of Wormtongue. Though I do not doubt that Wormtongue at home wrapped their meaning in terms more cunning. My lord, if your sister's love for you, and her will still bent to her duty, had not restrained her lips; you might have heard even such things as these escape them. At the idea of amazement at someone having a differing preference on films. It doesn't seem surprising to me that people's tastes are wide and varied. On the specific issue of DOS, the surprise is also a bit surprising given the number of reviews which were more positive than for AUJ and, in fact, picked out some of the areas you mention as "most improved". But then there we are. I suppose what surprises us is just as varied as what delights or disappoints us.

The Hobbit films are indeed a warmer, softer, almost playful sort of fantasy as opposed to the darker, grittier, even horrific fantasy of the LOTR films. I can see how some could prefer the former to the latter. Different strokes.
